Guy who helped develop the Diablo studios, was a king of the gaming world, then left Blizzard because it became too corporate, as well as having disagreements with many, many people at the company, developed flagship studios with some fellow ex-blizzards and developed some terribad games.

I haven't heard about his disagreements with people, but Hellgate failed because he sucks ass at business. There's no reason to doubt his developing skill imo.

there's no such thing as a game failing because of business. hellgate was overhyped and sucked right down to its core gameplay (sadly, was really looking forward to it back then)

yeah yeah yeah no, I mean it sucked cause he didnt organize enough time & money (and possibly skilled employees) to produce the product he set out to make. That kind of mistake would of cut out a lot of content and features. I think if he were to be given infinite money, we should allow him as much optimism as we would anyone else.

Exactly. And no more than anyone else either. He's just some dude, he didn't invent diablo, and he sure as hell didn't come up with every single idea for hellgate london either (which, in all honesty, had a terrible setting anyway)

i disagree about the setting. I thought the idea was pretty damned awesome. It was the execution that sucked mucho ass.

Fair enough , I just don't care for the post apocalyptic-yet-cyberswords-and-magic-with-guns-too-whynot type stuff. Then again, most people are sick of WW2 games and I still DL most of the good ones, so to each his own I guess.
SycoShaman wrote: | Whos Bill Roper and whats he famous or infamous for? |
from wiki : "Roper oversaw and managed all external projects, coordinated internal development teams, and headed Blizzard's project oversight teams where he was instrumental in shaping the direction of the company's games."
Basically he's management, but apparently people think if he worked at blizzard he must be a genius and came up with all kinds of amazing ideas because he worked at blizzard oh my god blizzard did I mention he worked at blizzard? <- see the problem here? He's not a designer, he's management. People seem to forget this, and think he's full of awesome because he was there when things got big for Blizzard. It's the story stuff that caught my interest in most blizzard games, not the company itself. Sure he probably pitched an idea here and there but it's not like he was the brains behind any of the major stuff.
OH MY GOD THIS GUY I READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT WAS A JANITOR AT BLIZZARD AND NOW HE WORKS FOR INFINITY WARD SO MAYBE CALL OF DUTY 6 IS GONNA BE LIKE THE NEXT STARCRAFT OR DIABLO!!!!

Molyneux is an idealist who nearly fails in every attempt at adapting his games from his ideas.
Roper is what Bill Gates was to Microsoft after he founded it, before he became strictly a business guy.
He was an idea guy, but not little cool ideas, he was big ideas.

Ok so now im confused.
He developed the ideas for games? Like not make them but say "We're gunna make a spy game and here's how I want it to be" etc
Is that what he did?
And what games did he make or produce or manage or whatever you wanna call it?

Warcraft, Warcraft 2, Starcraft and Diablo - He was the idea guy for Diablo and contributed many overall concepts to the warcraft and subsequently the starcraft series.
You basically got it bang on with your description of what he did. He wouldn't be the guy who was like the UI is gonna have this and this and this, he'd be the guy that says, I want the UI to be like this, they'd do it, then they come back to him and he says its okay... maybe a little less hands on, especially as the company became more and more popular.
Here is an example of his overall roles from wikipedia for Diablo : - Producer, Voice Production, Casting & Directing, Story, Voiceover, Documentation, Strike Team

Ah I getcha Phlux
In other words, aside from ideas, he's useless. I bet most of us here could do his job. Not only do his job but do it 10x better because we are all serious gamers and know what ppl wanna see and what kinda features ppl want (depending on the game).
I know if I had a team of programmers (or a team of syn's lol ) and all I had to do was come up with ideas and not actually have to implement them, I could "create" one hell of a fuckin sick ass spy game that would kick MGS and Spllinter Cells ass.
Ive been wating to make an espionage game for years and I have a TON of ideas that if they were implemented, it would be a multi-million dollar game.
Im positive.
And Im sure goes for others on here. I just happen to enjoy spy/espionage type games.

Would I be correct in comparing it to City of Heroes? Some say it's almost identical to it but with greater graphics, I'd just like to know if they're full of shit or not. |
The beta is at very specific times and I, unfortunately, haven't been able to participate much due to that time schedule. i am hoping it gets more flexible in the future.
It holds a lot of promise. The customization for characters is far above City of Heroes.
It has a lot more "comic book" look to it. The graphics are very similar to cell shaded which adds to the atmosphere imho.
I had my doubts when I read that Roper was involved in it, but the game is shaping up rather nicely.
It can only be compared to city of heroes in that it is a game based on super heroes.
Not to mention, in this one it has under water environments and such. It also has the advantage of being based on a pen and paper game.

Actually, to ay it can be compared to City Of Heroes in that it is a game based on Super Heroes is a bit unfair. I know that Roper was a big fan of COH. So, of course there are some similarities but so far in the beta... there's a lot of differences. From what i gather, a hero will be able to design their own arch nemesis which will be utilized in the story archs. You even customize the look of your powers and stuff.
