I'm sure you can play it as slow as you like. For demo purposes, I think they just wanted to show alot, quickly...

u don't have to bash through everything, it's just this time u have total freedom, no more 3 alarms and mission is over Razz
stealth or pwnage

player abilities are amazing, stuff he can do and action is so synchronized it feels like watching some cgi film

love it, will be best SC since ever

bourne was mindless crap where u had to do scripted stupified fights by pressing pre-scripted buttons, can't even compare to it

Demonstrations are always fast-paced and easy, because the difficulty level is usually set to low (or the dev is using God-mode) and the dev probably played the exact sequence dozens of times. So he's just going through the motions like a player on speed would.

That should really be common sense, guess for some people it isn't!

I'll probably get a lot of flak for this, but I was never a huge fan of the original Splinter Cell games... I mean, I like stealth (Thief/Hitman <3) but SC just never really grabbed me. This new one, on the other hand, REALLY looks fun Very Happy

Personally I feel that true stealth involves you getting up close and personal, this is the epitome of a stealth master.

Splinter Cell made it too easy to attack from a distance with almost no penalties, whereas those other games you mention require absolute accuracy to succeed at ranged combat.

It was common sense for me, but the way they talked about the game seemed more like they'd just gotten rid of the stealth features and just leaving some stealth oriented moves in the game, like climbing on rails and such. I just got that impression from what they were saying.

Ok fair enough, but if that was really common sense for you why did you come on this forum looking for reassurances that the stealth gameplay was intact?

You could have come to the conclusion yourself that the nature of game promotion is fast and furious so the gameplay videos are probably not representative of any stealth aspects in the game.

Have faith in yourself Yondaime, you know the score!

Too right!! Thief, to me, was all about the blackjack and shooting out torches Very Happy

A lot of people gave Thief 3 a bad rap, but I actually rate it as the best one. Not *just* because of the graphics (but nobody can deny that using UE2 gave the game a shitload more atmosphere largely thanks to the better lighting and more realistic character models) but because of the atmosphere itself. "The Cradle" will forever stand out as one of the most chilling areas I've ever seen in a game.

Nothing was better than nocking a water arrow, taking out a lamp from 50 yards, then sneaking up for a blackjack take-down while the guards panic Very Happy

Ok, just to take this thread a littttttle bit further off-topic; give me three good reasons why Thief 3 is inferior to 1 or 2.

Go!

More linear levels, lack of capacity to actually have a highly enjoyable sword fight if you get caught, less consistency in the quality of the levels (at least in comparison to Thief 2).

It's still a good game don't get me wrong, but Thief 2 is the pinnacle of the series in my opinion. Of course it's dated tech could make it feel inferior to Thief 3 if you played it now.

I also forgot to mention the mid-level load points, hated those!

We all are to different degrees. Once you get used to a certain graphical fidelity level you take it for granted, and it's difficult for most people to go back to something below that quality level. It doesn't make you a graphics whore it makes you human. Smile

Aww, I'm human Sad

I guess it's 3D stuff that's hard to go back to - especially after playing more recent titles. Sprites, on the other hand, I have absolutely NO qualms about enjoying. I can happily go back and play "Monty on the Run" on a C64 emulator, or some of the older platform and RPG titles on the SNES.

Being human is not a bad thing, it's just that most people live lives so far below their potential it can sometimes make it seem like it is.

Well talking to dead people is a bit strange (Razz) but ok:

To be honest, consolization in itself is enough of a reason to make DS inferior to Thief 1 & 2.

*Smaller and less complicated levels (and thus less alternative paths, options for the player) - Everyone always remembers to mention the Cradle, and while it was a great level, one level can't redeem a whole game. Level design overall was less inspired, and consolization can be blamed only partly.

*loading screens mid-level - not only did the PC players have to suffer from the other bullshit that comes with consolization, we were also forced to deal with the arbitrary Xbox hardware limitations, even though the PCs at the time would've so easily handled the levels. Of course this is more of a standard industry approach these days, but fuck that was so annoying to realize back then.

*more streamlined, action-based approach - the devs have admitted this themselves, you can google for interviews and such. Yeah you can still stealth and do the levels with the classic non-violence approach, but if they would've had their eyes on making a pure stealth game, I bet there would've been more options for stealth-based approach.

*Little things, like the loss of rope arrows and the crappy lockpicking minigame.
There were a lot of these small annoyances, but it's been a while since I last played DS.. Need to replay it so I can whine some more. Very Happy

And don't get me wrong, DS is still a decent/good game overall, but not a classic like the earlier games.

He started it!

Anyway, back on-topic: I hope you can still complete levels with pure stealth - shooters are dime a dozen but good stealth/sneaking games are very rare.
