Call me crazy, but some how I think the repair centre will most likely power the console on to confirm RROD. Worth a try I suppose

If it's out of warranty you'll still have to pay even for a RROD fix. So you might as well just tell them what the real problem is.

You could always just throw a pile of laundry on top of the 360 and run it until it shutsdown... chances are you will have RROD before you know it.
P.S. Just dont burn your house down.

It's either still in warranty or it isn't. Microsoft isn't specific about what kind of repairs are valid, as long as its related to a non-invasive hardware failure.
The only problem I can see is if they test it (and they will) and find the fault is due to negligence or tampering. Then they might just send it back unrepaired, but theres still nothing to lose by this.
Just send it in, and if it's still in warranty chances are you'll get it repaired regardless of the nature of the fault.

Can't you just do the Towel-trick? I.E wrap some towels around the xbox and leave it on until it overheats and you get the RROD.

It will say its out of warrenty anyway but will still let you go through the process , and when you select rrod as the problem it should state the price as £0. |
Meh, never got that to come up.. Think it was my ad blocker or something.. I've had to do it over the phone instead.

I have a question.
I have 2 xbox 360 consoles. 1 of them Ive had since 2006 and the other one I recently purchased. The second one that I purchased it had RROD but I fixed it. And the condition of the second console is completely brand new. I even have the warranty sticker saved on wax paper.
Both of these consoles are February 2006 premium edition and have Samsung MS25 drives.
My older console however, repeatedly keeps giving me all sorts of errors. On average, I had to open that console at least 10 or 20 times a week because of issues. Now it just wont even turn on. The very middle light goes green but then nothing happens and no picture. I can't deal with this anymore. So I was thinking, would it be wise to attach the warranty sticker to my OLD console and send it in to Microsoft for a replacement and then just sell it?
Both of these consoles do NOT have any xclamps. Does Microsoft check for xclamps?

1.they check for xclamps
2.why not replace the borked guts with the new case that has the serial number with valid warranty + warranty sticker

Well thats was I was planning to do. Just put the old motherboard and drive and everything into the new cover and attach the warranty. The cover is in mint condition.

ALright so I found the xclamps and put them back on lol. Theyre not bent in any way either. So now I put the old motherboard and dvd drive and fan and stuff into the NEW metal case because I noticed the metallic case has a serial number on it which matches the serial number on the white outer case. I also checked the serial numbers on the other components like fan, heatsinks, motherboard, RF module but they don't seem to match the console case's serial number so I don't think that matters much.
I also checked google for pics of the original xclamp positioning and put them back exactly in that way with the letters on the clamps facing a certain direction. I think I covered everything except one thing which I could not do. Under the heatsinks, I dont have the original microsoft thermal paste obviously. So I just put an extremely fine layer of arctic silver 5. Very neat and precisely covering only the surface of the chips. Thats the best I can do for now. I thought that would be better than having absolutely no paste in there.
Question: Do they check the dvd drive's fw? Should I flash back to ORIG?

I would definatley flash back to original. There would be no point going through all that trouble to swap the cases only to be cought out by something they could check in minutes. especially as it will only take you 5 minutes to flash it back.

The important thing to note is that the worst case scenario is that they just don't send you the Xbox back. It's not as if you have much to lose.

How do I flash back to original fw? Since Ive spent so much time just repairing, I completely forgot how to flash. I tried reading textbook's tutorial but it only mentions how to flash back to the original fw using the USB Flash drive that I used to flash it a year ago.

just send it back flashed, they don't test drive with a 360 backup, and loads of people i know have done it, some even get it back still flashed but normally the drive is replaced anyway
