A friend of mine told me that if you flash your drive with a iXreme 1.40 firmware, you're safe from having your console getting banned forever. Is that true? If so, what about those xbox updates which scare a lot of people having their console hacked?

I just flashed a Hitachi drive about 40 minutes ago to iXtreme 1.4. The console then downloaded an update after I turned it on, and then I also downloaded an update for COD4. And then I played COD4 online for about 20 minutes.
Lol so from personal experience, NO you will NOT get banned.....
By the way, wow Hitachi drives are quiet as hell!! Its freakin amazing. I used MS25s for over a year and that sound that the drive made while it started spinning a disc, doesn't even happen to the Hitachi. Plays the games identical to Samsung. Flashed at 12x offcourse but dang this Hitachi is quiet! It sounds like there is no disc in there at all. So after playing, when I quit back to the dashboard, theres no difference in sound. Thats how quiet it is!!!! AWESOMETASTIC

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time

dirtymurt, what fw did the banned one have?
And yes its very very close to being silent. even when I played GTA 4 which should make the most noise, I can barely hear the drive. And its not that the fan is blocking out the drive noise because the fan is also virtually silent. Basically this is the most silentest 360 console Ive ever worked with lol
And if you have your console banned, its not the end of the world. Just get another motherboard and drive and get rid of the banned one. Im currently using my 3rd xbox 360 console (for personal use) and I have not lost any money from my own pocket. None of these 3 consoles were ever banned. All 3 had 1.4 and I played games before they released while connected to live. All of these consoles downloaded updates and several game updates.
0 out of 3 banned over the course of a year. As of right now, no you will not get banned. The only thing nobody knows is how the fall dashboard will work.

still running on 1.2c FW always connected to live (played 80+ copies 30-40 of them online), 1.4 is overrated imo...

I had 1.2 revC for about a month on my old console. It kept giving me occasional disc errors so I just went to 1.3 and then to 1.4
1.3 also works great

No one really knows what gets you banned, I got banned after doing a firmware upgrade. My theory is that some sort of hash-check is done the first time you connect to live and if that changes you get banned. Atleast something like that happened to me since I had an old firmware and upgraded to a much newer one with a lot of changes.
Behold his GLORY! Bow for the technical master!

My first console was always connected to Live. It first had Orig fw (for about a year), and then 1.2 (for 1 month), then 1.3 (for several months), and then finally 1.4. But it never got banned.
