So I keep downloading HD rips, and they all seem to be in this .mkv file format.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 do not play them.

I have issues with codecs on my system and have uninstalled them all.

I tried using PS3 Video 9 on a MKV passthrough but it always fails. I have no idea what to do to get them playing on the Xbox 360.

I don't want to sit around for 5 hours converting each movie...

Can someone recommend the right codecs / codec pack to use, the right software to stream / convert / whatever .mkv movie files to both PS3 and Xbox 360 formats.

Any advice is welcomed...

360 can only play WMV files encoded in VC1. Considering there are no professional VC1 encoders out (as far as I know), that's not the best option.

For PS3, the best thing to do is switch containers (MKV -> Bluray's M2TF) and make a mini-Bluray.

It's easy to encode them to 360's WMV, but it takes 10-20 hrs on C2D.

Changing containers is dependent only on HD speed, so about 15-20min should be enough.

I've seen quite alot of HD rips encoded in WMV VC1 (or whatever) that get released for playback on X360's...Might wanna download those instead of downloading x264s and reencoding them Very Happy

e.g.: Shoot.Em.Up.2007.Bluray.VC1.1080P.5.1.WMV-NOV

I love the PS3 because in the system manager thing, it has the option "Install another OS". Brilliant.

Try tsMuxer
http://www.smlabs.net/tsmuxer_en.html

Convert the .mkv to a .m2ts file although if the original .mkv was 4.37gb the
output file may be around 4.6gb so you'll need to split it, which tsMuxer can do.

Or burn it to a dual-layer Smile

This is all you need, really: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKV2VOB

Set encoding in configuration to never. Then all that will be done is a remux of the file. Depending on your system, could take anything from a few minutes to around 30 (if DTS to AC3 is needed).

If for some reason you get no video but sound, that means you need to re-encode the video.

Why not just transfer the h264 stream from the MKV into the MP4 container instead of transcoding?
