Yea, ATM you can afford it but what about in a few years? With the new girlfriend and the family? If that is what you want? £300 isn't going to cut it.

Perhapes I leap to conclusions. I thought you were thinking new. Like off new and just off the lot. If so I should Apologize.

You could put up the car to any of your parents to lower the insurance considerably. Mine went down more than half when I registered my Audi A3 on my father.
Dont mess with God, he can impregnate your girlfriend/wife without taking his pants off!

Your just asking for a mistake to happen, like most overconfident young people who have just learned to drive. Go with option one.

I have to agree with Parallax. You're inexperienced and you're thinking of getting something with power. That's just madness.
MG ZR, I didn't know you were a male hairdresser.

better a GOLF IV TDI GT , 150 hp , good fuel consumption and it's fuckin german
or an Astra G Coupe 1.8 Turbo , but i guess you prefer the car that is visually tunned , but that's shit , it's only for atention whores.
i'd go for a good engine any day , eventually a lower suspension only if i would be considering going on a track .

Now, i honestly don't know much about the ZR itself, but from what i've heard from solid sources, MG/Rover aren't the most reliable type of cars.
But the most important things you need to check, and double-check, before you buy a car is:
- Spare parts cost. How much does servicing parts cost? Like brake pads/discs, filters, sparkplugs, bushings, anything! Good idea is also to check prices on more expensive parts, like clutches, suspension parts, exhaust etc. Prices can vary ALOT depending on what brand your car is. Things WILL break or need replacing, do not think otherwise.
- Insurance. This is important, never buy a car before you've called a few insurance companies and asked for a quote on the specific car you're looking to buy.
- Join a car-related forum - the more members/content the better - and ask about the model you're looking to buy. Most of the time, the model you want has some "standard flaws" that the model is suffering from. Every detail is worth noting.
Then the most important thing of all:
If you are not good with cars, or has little experience with them, YOU MUST bring someone with experience with you when you go looking at a potential buy. Have him look for anything that may be wrong, be it rust, weird noises when driving, any color shifting on the paintwork (this indicates that it has been resprayed, and has most likely been either involved in an accident or has had rust that has been removed/fixed), when was it last serviced etc.
Do not compromise on anything, if the car you're looking at isn't 100% what you want or in good enough shape, just look for another one!
Many of these points may be obvious to many, but many also overlook one or more of them. Be THOROUGH when you buy a car that costs somewhat much, cars costs money, and often more than you've expected, believe me.
Anyway, hope you found anything of this helpful, and good luck finding your car.

If legitimately the owner went about his day in that, he needs shooting. The Turbo bit tops the cake.

@kaeye
Even tho you are british and all, you should face the facts that british cars are far from reliable.
So unless you really are a nationalist id suggest you didn't get one.
And its your first car... unless you got nice parents I guess you would have to pay a lot in insurance. I watch Top Gear so I know you got different insurance classes and stuff. Citroen (at least c2) is very cheap to own but if you drive like a normal 17-18 year old boy it wouldn't last long. French cars do good in encap and have low co2 emissions but who cares when they are as unreliable as they are.
Buy a really cheap German or Japanese car (1988-1993 mod)
And if you want a nice sports car, try finding a cheap MR2, Celica.
And remember to buy one that are "EU checked"

Well after 10 pages of this thread you'll realize that Toyota Yaris is just the one for you. Get the one with 1.3 engine if you really want to live on the edge.
