|
 |
hi there,
been looking to buy myself a dell laptop for my oncoming studies and i've been focusing mostly on dell.
but since i have no freaking clue about notebook cpus and can't seem to find a useful comparison of them, i thought 'just ask the peeps at nfor... i mean, nfohump, they'll surely be able to help!'
so that's what i'm here for:
i have to decide between an intel core 2 duo 5750 - an core 2 duo 5850 or a core 2 duo 8100
obviously the 8100 would be the best choice (doh...) but seeing as the graphics card would be an ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3450 with 256 mb (again, no freaking knowledge about those mobility cards either).
does it make sense to go for a 8100 or wouldn't i be able to play games anyway or is the difference not that big? i mean, i won't be playing crysis on that thing but still
so, if anybody would take a few minutes and help me out on this topic, i'd really appreciate it

if you're going to pick one with a desktop machine cpu, don't expect the battery to last too long
i don't know what you're planning on using it most, but battery and physical size are the primary concern for me in a device that's supposed to be portable, hence eeepc901 for me with intel atom
not useful for modern gaming though, for which i have a desktop computer at home
if it's purely performance you're after and usually just keep it plugged in the wall outlet, then...
CPU does not have that much of an impact on modern games
especially with dual or quad cores that spread the load around
it's mostly an issue of the video card and memory

ok, so the graphics card any good?
ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3450
started also looking at the dell xps 15" notebook
which would have a nVidia GeForce Go 8600M GT in it - i suppose it's better? by a lot?

I laboured over this when buying my (dell) laptop and I regret it. Just go for the smallest, shittiest, cheapest piece of shit you can find. As long as it browses the internet and does word processing you should be golden (well, you haven't specified any special requirements?)
The screens are rather poor, so no matter how big you get it's not going to rival a real one - which is why you'll want to output onto an external to use it for something like graphic design. Playing games is a requirement you think you want to cover, but if you're anything like me (and already own a gaming desktop) you don't want to fret over that. It'll be 'noisy', sluggish, and impractical, as well as eat up all your battery life without being connected to the mains.
Now I'm just telling you my experience. I think everyone when they decide to buy their first laptop sets their sights on a desktop replacement - a jack of all trades. Well I regret that mentality and wish I'd gone for ultra portable, economical and cheaper... but you have to learn from your mistakes. Again; I'm not saying gaming viable laptops aren't possible. Mine plays games perfectly fine - I just don't like playing them on it! So, if you want my advice; just pick the cheapest.
But I know that doesn't help so I'm sorry in advance

for a 15"..go for wxga.
I got a 15" on my lenovo and it's native is 1024, anything smaller than that would kill my eyes.

notebook screens are way too small to run 1920x1200 and setting it to a lower resolution will make the picture look kinda blurry. Buddy of mine has an Acer with a 18.4" display with that 1920 native res and everything is microscopically tiny, so don't get that!
If you get a 15,4" display, 1280x800 (or whatever that is) that's fine for work

hm, okay, and what about the wxga+ which has a 1440 - which is mostly interesting because it's a WLED and they're supposed to be less energy draining?

lol I think your looking to far into this. Ya there an expensive investment but honestly, you should never buy a laptop that you have given a test drive. Screw all the online stats and reviews, go out and try laptops yourself, I only bought my lenovo based on reviews only because they're top of the line for years and still are. But anything else I'd go to the store and try them out.

which gets kinda hard with a dell laptop, no?
but apparently i know a guy who's got a xps (which, design wise is pretty similar - and it's the closest i'm gonna get to a studio 15)

bleh, the XPS laptops were rushed out the doors so theres a lot of build design flaws, like the casing not coming together all they in some spots, etc etc. I think there was an article about that on notebookreview somewhere.
