i have a strange problem with the laptop.

situation A)
Laptop is turned off and closed. I plug in the power cable: Laptop starts by itself and screen stays black. I open laptop and nothing else happens.

situation B)
Laptop is turned off and closed. I open it, press the power button. Laptop starts, screen stays black.

In both cases the screen stays black, there is a noise from the fan and the power button is green. I see nothing, no RAM memory counting, or startup screen, nothing. Only the green power light.

I dont think it is a HDD problem because even without a HDD you should get past the RAM memory counting thingie. I dont think my power source is fucked, because both with battery and cable i get the same result.

My guess was, 'stuck in hibernation' because normally when im working on battery and i run out of power, the laptop shuts down and when i insert the power cable the laptop starts by itself and wakes up from the hibernation mode. So i looked around on the internet and idd several people had the same problem, so i tried some stuff, but still not working.

Now im starting to think it might be the screen that is broken, and i just see nothing because of that, but then the booting when i insert the cable makes no sense.

I really dunno what the problem might be... Could it be a battery problem? i dont think so as the problems also occur when i remove the battery and insert the power cable...

I also have Dual boot, Fedora/Win Vista on it, but that cannot be a problem, that should be a problem after i see SOMETHING on the screen.

Any ideas what the problem might be and how to solve it?

edit: i removed my HDD and the same happens, so i guess it is purely hardware based, starting to think about bios maybe? i should be able to remove the mobo battery, where is it in a laptop? Rolling Eyes

i mean, if HDD is not causing the prob ( and thus is working i suppose) and i just turned off my laptop before the probs started, there is not much that can be broken i guess? cant i super reset my computer on some way, djeez, this is killing me...

Don't you have some screen around to plug with your laptop's VGA output if it has one?

Maybe a BIOS problem. Not sure what you can do in a laptop to erase the BIOS settings. Maybe take it to a service shop and they can reflash it.

Or maybe it's a RAM problem ? Try messing with the RAM.

P.S.: If it was a screen problem, the PC would pass the booting and start the OS etc. So it shouldn't be that.

1. are the motherboard drivers installed and configured for windows/linux?
2. see bios settings and update if newer available

*reads original post properly*
oh, right *face palm*
it's surely a hardware problem
a short somewhere or blown part
laptops are much fishier to diagnose as you can't just go around switching parts around, all being non-standard
if there's any chance of RMA, do it
beyond that, i would open it up and take a close look at all the components to see if anything is blown and make sure all the cable and memory and all other connections are in properly
try switch other memory in if you have any spare
resetting bios is a good idea to try - just remove the battery (the one on the mainboard) and wait a while

i tried a lot of stuff, all didnt work...

I went to a computer shop (first time in my life...) and i told them to find the problem and call me when they find it.

Crap laptops, i have dozens of desktop pc parts that i can use to diagnose a broken pc, but this was actually my first laptop and it is broken after 1 year *sigh*... I hope they find the problem and hopefully it is fixable for a cheap price, but i doubt it. At least the HD is still working and i will buy laptop SATA to external USB drive casing thingie. A 100GB external drive for 20 euro and recovery of my precious data...

Same problem here on my Toshiba. It goes to sleep/hibernate and doesn't wake up. Everything running, can hear the vent spinning but the screen stays black.

Maybe there is something wrong with Vista, because I had this problem on 2 different Toshiba laptops.

I need to press the power button and hold it for 5 seconds to make a hard reboot, then everything goes back to normal.
