|
 |
Well I just got my birthday gift - a new PC , but after the European laws were enacted in my country the shops no longer offer a build-in "trial" version of an OS to go with it...So I am basically left without an operation system and without a clue what is currently out there( been using the same XP CD for re-installs for two years now)...
I checked some of the topics and I realized I am basically limited to eider Vista 64 bits or an XP 64( due to having 4 gigs of RAM)...Can some one please explain to me if there is any sense in getting a Vista at the moment, and what would be the positives for me as a user...Also are there any specifics to the installation that I should be aware of or is it "burn and wait" as with the XP....
For the 64bit version of XP I would just like to ask if I need a CD or a DVD disk to burn it on( or will any disk at all work) and is there a good working hmmm..."test version" out there that I could use...
Also for reference the configuration is:
Asus P5Q - E motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E 8400 (3 GHz )
2x2Gb DDR 2 Corsair 800mhz
The video card is irrelevant but I am really tempted to ask if I did the right choice(actually due to budget it was the only choice I had for a high-end video)
Point of View GF 9800GT 512 DDR3
I couldn't find a single review for it...
All I need to know about the video is it stable enough as it is or do I need to change to cooling system( that fan looks quite massive but doesn't look like it is going to be enough).Because I have this real bad memory of the last card of theirs I had (a GF 5500 waaay back then) that when I once tried to run 3D Mark 2003 just died....
Well..thanks in advance for the advice....

well, are you going to game on that system? Because if you plan to use it just for regular office-progs, internet and watching dvds, then you should go with linux.
Else you still can go with xp, losing about 500mb, because it can only adress 3,5gig. Dont go with XP 64, there arent enough drivers around for it and there is not enough performance, so you d better go with Vista if you want to have the full 4gigs.
looking at your video-card i bet you want to play games, so i d suggest going with vista, as it ll give you the ability to play newer games in dx10 and without the hassle of having to wait for xp-downgrade-hacks (like with halo2 and similar).

Well I actually bought it so I can "PWN N00bs on CS and DoTA on it, couse me cousan tell me da better da PC da better moar killz I will make"...Sorry..Was just reading that "euro trash" topic and got into an act....
Yes I bought it for gaming, but this doesn't mean I won't be using it for anything else...
Also about the memory loss with XP , I thought I would lose whole 2 gigabytes, because I considered the OS would ignore the whole second memory stick as physical presence( this was my uneducated guess on the matter)..If the loss is only 512 mb I can live with it..
But that rises another question, will a usual XP use the second core effectively?I thought for it to be...active you need special drivers that are only for the 64bit editions...that is "active" in the sense of used in dual core optimized software( mainly games)?
As for Vista and Dx10, I have yet to see a game that has any significant difference in DX 10 mode then Dx 9...Actually Age of Conan was supposed to be so but I am really not into MMOs....for now( I am buying WAR tomorrow)
So...Won't Vista be consuming way to much of my CPU potential and RAM? Last I heard it eats away up to 1,5 gigs only for the OS itself ?
PS: Now my priority question suddenly became "Can I bake an XP install CD on a DVD , or does it have to be a CD ?"

When I did my research (before buying), i found that XP notices 3gb to 3.5gb (depending on mobo, luck, weather). Also, if you'd go for 64bit system - go Vista. As I got 8gb of ram this time, I went for vista x64 (after several years of XP usage), and I can't complain. I'm a casual gamer tho.

well, you could just try a normal install of xp and just see if it works out for you. If it doesnt, get yourself Vista and do a dual boot installation. That way you can compare both and see which one fits your needs better...
