In holland all the alarm bells are ringing, Fortis (a very big bank) nearly fell over, and now they are announcing an expected loss on the AEX (main stock exchange meter in the NL) of 10% when it opens tomorrow @ 09:00 AM.

What do you think, should we all run to the atm and get our hands on some cold hard cash?

Well I don't think it's time to panic. Everyone will just have to tighten their belts. Unless you have major investments in stocks or real estate you should be ok. Maybe your bussines income will suffer a bit and getting a loan will be more expensive but that's that. Just don't buy stocks.

Oh? The best time to buy stocks is when thay are at the lowest point, which is about now. Stocks like fortis , one week ago ~€15,- . Currently €5,35. the stock price can't go down because european banks are preventing fortis from going bankrupt, so the only way the stock can go is up, which makes now the perfect time for buying into the stock.

Buy now? The blood has even begun to hit the streets. Bail outs are just a band aid. IMHO this is just the start of the shit storm. Im glad the bail out plan in the USA didnt pass. We need the market to correct it self.

How do you know it's the bottom? I think unless USA decided to shovel some big bucks into this shit hole the stocks are far far from bottom. In a way it would be good to bankrupt the entire loaning system and start from a clean slate. But my guess is that there are some very influential people in the background who will buy up all the banks while they are being sold for peanuts. This way they'll control the entire economy.

With a current stock price of €5,00 they can't go down that much because the european goverments won't let fortis fall over. So the only way is up. (for fortis that is)

This is impossible because there is something like market regulation, were goverents make sure that companies can't just start buying other companies so that they will become the only one on the market. This is why it would be impossible for boeing to buy airbus because it won't leave any competition on the airplane market, and thus a price monopoly (which will make airplanes even more expensive.)

True but I bet governments would look the other way just for someone to save failing companies. Antitrust, monopoly & competition laws wouldn't be strictly enforced here in my oppinion. Besides often it's very hard to determine the owners of certain company and connect all the dots since the tentacles often spread all over the world, especialy in financial institutions.

Yes Europe will invest into their banks to save them from going bankrupt but the costs to avoid this are much lower than in USA. But stock prices are a bitch to predict when panic ensues since investors don't always act rational. Best thing is to just keep the money you have and wait it out until the dust settles. Investing in gold & other resources is a good investment right now IMHO.

like pistol said, selling stocks and such is a bad idea right now. I mean, most countries are in the tank.

Buying however is an excellent idea...as long as you buy into a good company/stock/firm/whatever....who knows, you could quadruple your money in a year or 2

This is how people are going to make money because everything is so cheap but you have to have the capital. Lots of people who saved are going to be getting ahead outta this in the long run.

I remember this from the 80's, I was a kid but still. Everything just went way down, houses, stocks, ret. funds. Investments done on loan credit became a write off in some cases they owed more money then what the origional loan was worth.
