It's better then the previous ones and pretty comparable to Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo series... definitely worth a disc.

They're both arcade racers (despite what Driveclub's dev claims, there's little sim in there). But look at that video and compare it to the similar off-screen videos from Driveclub. Driveclub's cars seem to float, they're disconnected from the road. And as I said before, it has no sense of speed whatsoever.

This exactly. All racing videogames on consoles are arcade racers. Then people fight each other which one is less arcade. The only racing game on consoles I remember having many sim driving elements is Formula One Championship Edition.

Well from what I hear, Forza's (not Horizon) handling actually has lots of sim elements. Still lacks the damage model though. I can't really comment on that since I don't an Xbox

That all sounds good.
"Bluntly inaccessible" and "ridiculous learning curve"

Every other site says it's pretty much like GRID 1. Now, I don't know about you guys, but that was perfectly accessible. Their problem with it is that you start in shit cars instead of starting in super cars straight away. And you actually have to work a bit to get to the front of the pack. Sounds all good to me as I enjoyed GRID 1 for what it was.

A GRID 1-level game with Forza-style progression and openness would be fantastic to me. I was tempted to grab the 360 version while I'm away but egh, I might as well just wait until I'm back:)

I have the 360 version, it takes me back to the original Toca series. Well worth a look.
