|

There is yet to be a horror game that is truly terrifying. Most horror games are scary for the first 30 mins to 1 hour of play and then become just like any other game.
The Suffering comes close to keeping you on the edge of ur seat for some time, but even that just becomes a standard fps after a while.

You have to be able to really put yourself in the game. Turn off all the lights, put on your 5.1 or 4 channel audio, or throw on some high quality headphones and get yourself a big clean monitor. Its like watching a scary movie in broad daylight, what gets you scared about that?

It's a videogame, do you really expect to be totally freaked out?? Try Nosferatu, it's actually the scariest game out of all the horror games I played, including SH series, RE series, Fatal Frame, The Suffering, Undying, AvP...

The original Resident Evil for PSX scared the p00p outta me when I first played it. Especially that first time you walk through that hall and the dogs come smashing through the windows.
Eep.

I agree. Once i watched The Exorcist in the morning and I thoguh it wasn't scary, but then i watched it again at night, alone in the dark, man that moviee is scaryy!!
Yes the time of the day dramatically makes a difference whether playing a horror game or watching a horror movie.

damnit sto0z i was gonna say that . yea thats my 1st experience of following through. undying was pretty scary at the time, also i think the thing built up the suspense pretty well. the suffering didnt scare me that much. once i saw the enemy looked like voldo out of soul caliber it lost the scare factor for me. although some freaky bits were when things just popped up. undying made me shit myself when i 1st saw them samurai thingies in the chapel.

You should try Fatal Frame or Fatal Frame 2, very well done scare games they are.
Excellent usage of the vibratin PS2 pads too.

if you wanna get scared, buy/rent a movie, don't play a game.

Only problem I have is that I played sooooooo many scary games through the years that not much scares me anymore. Though it seems like I'm bragging, I'm not... I'm actually disappointed.
The have only been a few games that have scared the everliving hell out of me and they were the AvP series (Marine missions and some Pred missions) and System Shock 2.
Seems to me that the horror genre is relying heavily on the action side nowadays. I remember games back in the old days where you didn't shoot a whole lot. You simply spent most of your time standing in a corner hoping to God that the next step you took wouldn't spawn three aliens that would pop your head off... why??? Because number one, they were hell to kill... you sprayed 50 bullets and hit air then got owned by the one in front of you. Then the one behind you that you didn't even know was there starts to tear bacon off your back. You know that you only have half a clip left and that the sounds and the radar beeping means you're about to get jacked. I remember saving that game and quitting because I just couldn't handle it anymore. That's what I want again.
But now it seems that they're appealing more to the slasher flick fans than the true horror fans. Now it's "I see anything, it dies... it dies quick... if I run, I lose." If ya ask me, hootouts should be few and far in between. Not because there aren't enemies, but because you're too damn busy running or you don't wanna leave your little safe corner. I want the creatures not only to be visibly horrifying, but to scare me in the way they move and attack, but moreso in the way that they STAY away or hide from me. I wanna see a dark spot and avoid it like the plague because i just know something's gonna pop out and eat me.
Gore and violence doesn't affect me much. I wanna be messed with on more than just a "ooh that looks scary" scale. I wanna get done with the game and think about it... I wanna run as fast as I can to turn the light back on.... oh man, them were the days.

Resident evil was kinda in the middle. I think doom III will have a good mix of hardcore killing through small corridors as well as slow scary steps. The lighting makes a huge difference in a game, and Doom III will have some really nice lighting that should make it more exhilerating.
