The Fucking Witcher! I spent about 2 hours just doing side quests around Vizima and gambling trying to be able to afford new armor, though when you lose 800 orens to a fucking hooker, it hurts you on the inside.

Oblivion because it's almost limitless to what you can do, extremely interactive design. It has on of the most active mods scenes of any PC game.
Sims 2 for the same Reason.
Witcher wasnt any good as a free form game since the exploration wasnt any fun (invinsible walls all over the place and the witcher's movements are very limited as well, can't jump/climb etc) + very linear in its level design, no mod scene to speak of to my knowldge, not very interactive at all.

All good suggestions. Sadly, my rig is pretty dated. AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 1 GB RAM, GF7600 GT.
Limits my options a bit. I found the Witcher unplayable when I tried after it came it out awhile back, dunno if it would be any better now.
Oblivion is pretty good for freefom, but again, it's doesn't run all that well on my system and I found the world to have a cookie cutter feel to it. The ruins all seemed like cookie cutter setups with no real unique ones unless they were tied into the main plot.
Space Rangers (and the second I guess) was a bit too twitchy for my taste. I couldn't get used to the top down perspective of it very well and thus didn't enjoy it particularly.
Played the living shit out of X3 already. Waiting for Terran Conflict. Ditto for Fallout 3, not big on Far Cry really. I didn't care for the first one.
I gave that monstrous Sacred 2 a try, just to see if it would work. It worked alright but it wasn't anywhere near playable. 10 fps at most on the lowest possible settings. I kinda figured I wouldn't be able to run it, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. Idiot developers and there minimum system requirements. My system does meet them, but there is no way I could play the game like that nor could anyone else. That whole system needs to be completed revamped in the industry to something more pointful and useful.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. Keep the ideas coming. I'm dying for something to play.

Tried freelancer? should run beautiful on that setup. you can build a good gaming rig around the AMD x2's for cheap, the core 2 duo's are getting pretty cheap now too for a good performer.
Also if you want to play sacred 2, try the first one, it'll run.

I've tried Freelancer a couple of times, got about halfway through at which point I kinda lost interest. It just went from different looking fighters to new different looking fighters
I think I'll give the original Sacred a go maybe.
That's the problem with these types of games, the best freeform games are always going to be MMOs, too bad there's people to ruin the fun. I can think of a hell of alot of MMOs that would make great single player games. Pity. |
you tried guild wars? it's an MMO but it can be pretty much SP if you don't quest with anyone. You can talk to people in cities but if you leave without anyone, your all alone to do everything.

Hmm. No, can't say I have. I heard it was mostly centered around PvP. Might give it a go, I'll check it out.

nah, I very rarely did PVP, the scenery is beautiful for an MMO, the main quest is pretty decent, kept me going. the side qeusts are usually collect so many etc for gold.
I was addicted to it for the longest time, haven't touched it in forever though, waiting for guild wars 2

It's a sad state of affairs to say any of these are "free form".

If you havent tried Morrowind I strongly recomend checking it out. The best free roam game I ever played and you can just go about lost in your own world.
You can create insane armor, do political quests without killing anything and much much more. And with a few mods the skys the limit.
Dont mess with God, he can impregnate your girlfriend/wife without taking his pants off!

I got Mount & Blade already, I've had it since .808. I'm waiting for the mods to be updated to the latest version before I give it another go. You can only play vanilla so much before it starts to get pretty tedious.

Everytime someone ask about this, Morrowind comes to my mind, also GTA.
But, to say something not already said: Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Titan Quest, Diablo.
Morrowind is plenty ridiculous about the things you can do completely ignoring the main quest, you can even finish the game in some minutes, there are videos of that, and you still will have 200 hours of game.
I used to be a knee like you. Then I took an adventurer in the arrow.

boiling point: road to hell.
spore
star control 2
and Titan Quest? well, if that's free form(or roam), then you can safely add all the other rpgs to the list. all of them.
i'm not saying that TQ doesn't fit into ExcaliburB's definition of free form.. 'cause it does. i'm saying that the definition is way to vague.
