This might not be the right place to post this so feel free to move it mods
I'm having a problem that's giving me deja vu's to the late 90's and my first run ins with home networking.
The simple way to put it is that I can't find a good way to transfer stuff between my computers. Now let me explain more precisely.
I have two computers (check sig), both connected to a gbit-switch. Also connected to the switch is a 100mbit internet-connection.
Now when using uTorrent both computers are able to maximize my connection capping at around 11.5 mb/s. I recently formatted both computers, prior to this they were both XP SP2 and I used a simple ftp client/server to transfer between them which worked without issues utilizing most of what the gbit-connection had to offer.
I haven't had to transfer anything up until lately and then the problems sort of piled on eachother. First of all i could not get my ftp-server (using G6FTP Server 3.9.0) working on my movies-computer, just would not allow any connections, tried with firewall off (using Comodo), did not make any difference, tried with anti-virus off also (using NOD32), same deal.
I did however get it to work the other way around - server on gaming-computer, client on movies-computer. Worked straight away. Problem solved i thought. Nope. I'm getting speeds of about 1.5mbps. Almost one tenth of what both computers get from the internet. Same thing when i try across irc and let's not even discuss msn.
A friend of mine was over playing GOW2 this friday and he's studying to become a network technician or something similar and i thought he could help me but he's a slacking piece of shit and couldn't really work it out either
We tried to just create a normal windows homenetwork and (this is where it got nostalgic for me) even though I could see the movies-computer in my network places on my gaming-computer i could not connect to it, just a minutes wait for an error.
I COULD just throw a network-cable between the computers (both have 2x gbit) but i use one for my dreambox so it would be a hassle and it sort of defeats the purpose of the switch anyways. It's not like i need to transfer stuff often but it's the sort of thing that gets you all pissed off because here i have two computers fairly high-end computers, 5 cm from eachother, both capable of gbit speeds, a gbit switch, and stuff that i want transferred but noooo.
So any tips or tricks you can think of, throw em at me
Oh yeah and I have another, perhaps related problem. On my movies-computer, as I've said it's capable of 10+ mb/s speeds, I have horribly slow load times in firefox. On my gaming-computer the load times are pretty much as you would expect from a 100mbit connection - instant as long as the page in question has a fast connection. But on my movies-computer it's like surfing on a 56.6k modem. And uTorrent can blast away at full speed.
If it helps I'm using the following stuff.
Gaming-computer:
Vista SP1
Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0.25
ESET NOD32 3.0.650
Movies-computer:
XP SP3
Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0.25
ESET NOD32 3.0.621
