With a Core 2 Duo and 4GB of ram, there is no noticeable difference between XP and Vista. The drivers have matured quite well already.

About DX10, the only game I remember that it actually ran faster than DX9 was Crysis Warhead (of all games), that looked better and ran faster. Otherwise, it's the same performance-wise as DX9. Smile

This is not true. He can put XP x64 and he will have all 4GB of memory. On the other hand, even if he puts Vista x86, he will still lose the memory.

Only 64bit systems allow 4GB+ RAM. So you'd either have to choose XP 64bit or Vista 64bit. Anything above aproximately 3,2 Gb on a 32bit system goes to waste. That is 3,2 Gb = RAM + graphics cards RAM. Either way 32bit systems are going to be a thing of the past for gamers in 2 years in my oppinion since most new games will require more than 3GB of available ram to function on high detail. Which is what you want probably.

Quote:
the term x86-64 is often used to denote 64-bit software, with the term x86 implying only 32-bit.

The names x86-64 or x64 are often used as vendor-neutral terms to collectively refer to x86-64 processors from any company.

XP x64 is a different code-base (from Server 2003) than XP x86, so you have to see what is the most recent SP for Server 03, and that would be the latest for x64.

lol XP 64bit has HORRIBLE support.

IF your on Vista with that much memory your better off staying on it. They've got it working to the point theres no need to go back.

nah, this rig is still on XP. I'm prob moving to 64bit vista once I get the new one built since I'll have the memory for it.

If your major turn-off is the complexity of Vista (mentioned earlier) or that Vista runs too many background programs etc... then I'd suggest getting a copy of Vista-64 and using a program called VLite (www.nliteos.com) and customizing your copy of Vista to remove stuff like Aero & UAC -- and also some of the background programs -- this will make it closer to the functionality of XP /w minimum tweaking. Once you use vista for a while it'll grow on you, and besides 64bit is the future so you might as well jump on it now since your system will benefit from it.

IMO, and that of many others i've read -- Vista64 runs a lot smoother and has more compatability then XP64.

And why would he want to remove Aero? Vista feels much more smoother with it than without, and if a very rare occasion arises to need to disable it, then he can do it per application level.

Because he said vista is "heavy and complicated xp is simple and easy" by removing (or as you said disabling at application level) it'll bring vista much closer to XP... I was merely suggesting different solutions for poster to make it lighter and more like XP, which Vlite can provide.

It was the same with XP... :\

Shayetet13 (are you Israeli? Razz), just install Vista 64 and try it. If you don't like it, install XP 64.
