As part of a strategic partnership, Straight4Studios is teaming up with Reiza Studios, the Brazilian developer behind Automobilista and Automobilista 2.
Published by Plaion, Straight4’s unnamed GTR reboot is targeting a Q4 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. This will be the first time GTR has come to consoles. |

Love the teaser site!
I don't know how to feel about this game though. SMS is making Project CARS now, so I don't really see the point of a very similar game from the a sister company of SMS. I mean, both SMS and SimBin are part of the World of Mass Development project.
We'll see, I guess.

From RD:
In an effort to answer some of your questions, we had a little chat with Henrik Roos (CEO at SimBin Studios) and Chris Speed (SimBin's Executive Producer):
Spoiler: | Quote: |
RR: So, Henrik, this morning you pressed the first "Facebook Like" button on GTR3.com and officially started what looks like a PR campaign around this big project. What can we see on GTR3.com and why did you want to share it now?
Henrik: We have worked on GTR 3 for a long time. We have had several smaller projects in between though, but now GTR 3 starts to shape up. We have a lot of requests every day from our GTR fans, so why not start sharing some info?
Chris: What you can or can’t see can be debated, but we feel that we have made huge strides in different areas building on what was already a strong IP in GTR.
RR: Who is working on this project? It seems like SimBin has been recruiting a lot of people lately, what is the new team like?
Henrik: A lot has happened in SimBin over the last one and a half years. We opened a brand new headquarters in Lidköping and yes, we have reinforced the team with talents from all over the world. People like Chris Speed for example, he can tell you more about our crew.
Chris: As Henrik mentioned, we have gone through an aggressive recruitment drive over the past 8 months picking from an enormous talent pool from all over the world, Ukraine, Russia, Pakistan, Germany, UK, Belgium, the list goes on. We are still a relatively small team compared to other studios and rely on our external partners as many small studios do. However, we now feel we have found the right blend between youth and experience to drive us forward and continue to develop successful racing titles.
RR: This website focuses a lot on sounds, why is that?
Henrik: Well, back in the days when GTR 1 was in development, the first material that was leaked was a sound sample, so it is a nice way to remember and make the connection with where SimBin is originally coming from... and what is going towards ! It is definitely great to see how much we improved on this aspect, and the sound engine and samples quality are definitely amongst the many things that will make GTR 3 stand out !
Chris: We have definitely raised the bar when it comes to the sounds in GTR3. Yes the look and feel are extremely important but we have highlighted that the sounds give the player a much more immersive experience.
RR: Are all sounds in the teaser based on in-game material?
Henrik: Yes of course! Can you guess what car it is? Or even better, what track is it?
RR: The SimBin.com website is currently down with a message about Christmas cleaning, what is that all about?
Henrik: You will see the 15th of December. We will gradually increase the information flow and I can promise we have so much to tell and show! Also, we will show visuals when the time is right.
RR: What platforms are you preparing to release GTR3 on? If you can't yet provide any details, can you at least give us a clue about when we will find out?
Henrik: No, sorry I don’t have the date or more information about that yet.
RR: Is there anything you can disclose about GTR 3 yet? Anything at all?
Henrik: Yes, more info will come on the 15th of December at www.simbin.com and people can in the meantime discuss it on www.raceroom.net
Chris: I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed!" |

My biggest fear is that SimBin might eventually choose to go multiplatform with this one, but the Race Pro fiasco already showed that console gamers don't fancy "sterile" and demanding simulative racing games.
Spoiler: | Or maybe they could dumb the physics engine down and make the game more accessible, perhaps using some cool American driver such as Pastrana, Block or Vaughn derpin' Jr as sponsor

Are they using SMS's Madness Engine? That screenshot sure looks very similar to a screenshot from Shift/Shift 2/C.A.R.S.

It wouldn't even make sense to not use that engine. As far as I know SimBin and SMS are pretty much sister companies now.

Where did you come on info like that ?

The res of the pic might suggest that your fears are justified, considering they are posting that that is an in game unedited screen shot. If it was just pc you would imagine that they would show off at least full hd.
A bit pissed with such little info from them about the game.

In the past they were, I thought the general info was that at the end of GTR2 they had a major falling out and Ian went his own way. I wonder if the same thing happens with EA ? who actually cut off who and why.
Personally I hope this is Simbin's own engine.

Hm, I don't know. I remember Blimey! and SimBin had some very strong disagreements and some legal disputes if I remember correctly.

Hah, I didn't know that . The resemblance with Shift/Project Cars is striking, but perhaps it could be an -extremely- modified version of the GMotor engine...I guess we'll have to wait for the official announcement.

Also, Ian Bell was a SimBin employee before creating Blimey.

He was a founder; managing director until Blimey came into view, he then "stepped down" to "just" CEO. SimBin was just a little bitter

Yeah I've tried the closed beta for a couple of hours but didn't really like how it was structured. The handling/physics and graphics are good, but the rest..very forgettable, with that insane pricing structure and limited contents.

Some SimBin Guy wrote: | I think another point we need to take note of is, whilst the PC community would love this hard core simulation thing which is fine, as Allan said there is a console community that aren't going to fully adhere to that. The product at the end of the day needs to appeal to both sides, hardcore racer as awell and the casual gamer. A game that does that really really well is Formula One. I can have fantastic fun in the simulator on PC and I can have just as much fun as a casual gamer on a console. They do it really well. |
Yeeeeeeeah let's just see how this one turns out. Not against less realistic physics but don't sell me a lemon and call it an apple.

First women-only esports car racing competition announced
Quote: | UK developer SimBin Studios has announced the first women-only esports car racing competition - Women and Wheels.
The time-limited competition, which launches on Steam this autumn, will donate a percentage of its revenue to female-focused charities and "aims to provide a supportive, female-friendly environment that encourages more women to play esports while drawing attention to the often hidden role of women in racing and automotive history".
Despite being able to compete on an equal playing field with men, only five per cent of esports players are women. This is often chalked down to the major earning gaps between men and women as well as the online bullying women in games often endure.
SimBin Studio head Allan Speed said Women and Wheels aims to encourage women to participate in esports and improve their skills in a supportive environment. The overall goal is for these initiatives to eventually lead to equal participation and competition with men.
"Around seven per cent of our race competitors are female. Unbelievably, that's probably over average," said Speed. "We want to see more women enjoying the thrills and spills of the virtual track, and esports in general."
Marie-Claire Isaaman, CEO of Women in Games, said it was frustrating to think the gaming community can be so harsh and misogynistic that a women's-only competition was needed to encourage females to set foot in male-dominated territory.
"It's a shame we need women-only teams, leagues and competitions in esports," she said. "But until the sector fully matures, becomes more gender balanced and takes steps to eradicate online bullying and misogyny, they represent a great way to get more women involved by building communities, confidence and skills."
Prizes for competition winners include a €3000 Racing Simulator Chair, two Fanatec Racing Wheel and Pedal Sets, a life coaching programme from Epiphany Junkie and more.
Simbin UK is working on GTR 3, which is due out on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One next year. |
