Hey Guys,

Firstly is h.264 the best video format to use if you want to convert a DVD keeping it's high quality and getting it onto 1 CD?

I have quite a big dvd movie collection that I have backed up and using now with xbmc. It's just a load of ISO's. They take up a lot of space and I was wondering if you can make backups as 1CD under 700MB in h.264 with ac3 5.1 sound? With or without menus?

I have seen floating around the net groups making 2 CD xvid/divx dvdrips with 5.1 sound. I am not into piracy. So I would prefer backing up my own DVD library. I am sick of backing them up as ISO's as they take a lot of space up on my hdd. I would want to get the same bitrate of the ac3 5.1 track from those 2 CD rips but get them to fit on 1CD using h.264 without losing hardly any quality. Is this possible?

Then I hope it's possible to get from this dvdrip all data within xbmc like imdb rating, coverart, trailer etc, is this all possible like you currently can in xbmc with ISO's?

Any help much appreciated

Many thanks in advance

This and the other thread are really for the encoders section.

Anyway, with around 1400MB you can get almost flawless encode of most movies with a good AC3 soundtrack and optionally the commentaries in OGG or AAC. But 700MB is just way too low. You have to remember that while h264 is great, it's not a miracle doer, especially if you insist on 5.1, and AC3 no less.

moved both your threads.

And the answer is kinda the same that Leo gave in the other thread. The compressability of a video depends heavily on the material. So you might get away with it sometimes, sometimes not.

Do you have a big screen? Because depending on the quality / size of the screen you watch a rip on the problems are sometimes un-noticable.

And if you have a huge ass hd monitor, why burn to dvd and make them double the size, like Leo also said.

Many thanks for your replies guys

I am looking to watch my movies on a 120 inch front projection screen. I have done some1 cd xvid dvdrips with 2 channel stereo sound. On the projector it looks pretty good. I would say about 75 percent of DVD quality. Then I have done some 2 CD xvid dvdrips with 448 Kbit/s 5.1 sound and they are just as good as the original DVD. But this was a long time ago since then codecs have improved. So what are all these 1 cd movies floating around the net with 5.1 sound and h.264 fitted on 1CD? Are they really that bad?

Yeah, these days you can go the same resolution as the DVD + original AC3 + 2-3 commentaries into a 1400 h264 file.

you can do it, sure.. but why not do a test for yourself and if the 1cd with horribly low vid bitrate coupled with the studio ac3 seems fine to your eyes.. then do it that way.

but as said above, taking advantage of 2cd will give you much better results allowing for a better overall video bitrate and picture while keeping the ac3.

There's really no point in limiting yourself to using a fixed target bitrate or file size when encoding with x264.
You'll do much better using CRF mode with an appropriate CRF value (19-24 should give transparent or near transparent quality).

In particular, once you find the highest CRF value that still gives the quality you desire then you can use that value to encode your entire collection because CRF mode will maintain consistent quality for all those encodes.

The settings used by this group should give HQ results.

In short, if you're going with H.264 + AAC then use x264 + Nero AAC for encoding video and audio resp.

Based on your recent posts, thebeliever, you'll get better help at the Doom9 forums; just be sure to read the rules first!
