Recently i built a HTCP computer form a medion pc i got from a friend. The thing has got a SPDIF -in port. But when i connect a SPDIF cable to the computer i can see the volume bars go up and down, but i don't hear anything.

So my question is, do i need special software to playback the sound? or are there some things in windows that have to be adjusted?

I see bars moving, but there is no sound coming from my speakers... Confused

Because it's cheap as hell, but the computers still have decent hardware in them.

But the problem is still there, so what would be a way to play the sound that is coming into the computer on the speakers.

you need to connect the digital out to a digital receiver either by toslink cable or co-ax cable. Then make sure it is correctly setup on your amp and you should be good to go.

if your amp doesn't have a digital in or you are playing a signal it can't recognise such as DTS you won't hear much

The signal coming from my digital TV receiver, and i know it is arriving in the pc because i can see the volume bar moving in my audio setup screen (see opening post). I think that there are two possibilities at the moment:

1. Vista is muting the signal somewhere.

2. Vista can't playback digital audio input and i need an additional program (which one?)

No, just for decoding the television signal, and routing the sound from my xbox 360 to the media center PC , (which goes trough an analog TULIP cable ATM)

maybe I'm confused, are you not outputting this to a stereo receiver and TV?
