yeah, got my hopes up too that this will be the next big thing...lost odyssey was excellent, though imo a little bit too "traditional" final fantasy style. the jrpg genre needs some evolution.
btw, does anybody know how much discs it will have?

Famitsu gave Infinite Undiscovery a 32/40 and The Last Remnant 38/40. Then again, Famitsu lives for JRPG's, so take that with a grain of salt.

jrpg - ridiculous creatures, big guns, big eyes, enormous swords, big tits... Well, I'll rather watch a porn with big tits and pass on the rest.

IU was seriously under-rated, it had many unique elements implemented employed for the first time, the scoring should have reflected this; instead the execbots at the various magazines and websites decided to navel search instead.

Sooty says: "open the .dvd file of disk 1 with notepad and rename the .iso to dgr-tlra.iso."
Sweep squeeks: "Basically you are adding the letter 'a' to the existing filename because Dagger forgot it was a two disk affair."

Oh don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it. The gameplay was definitely the best thing about it for me, combat was very fun. I just couldn't get past the mediocre story and porcelain-doll character design, just personal opinion. A game has to have the whole package for me to rate it highly.
Anywho, I've just managed to play a little of TLR. Initial impressions - let's get the nasty things out the way first: technical problems. Texture pop-ins, slow loading times, frame rate hiccups in cut scenes and animations. I don't know whether this is due to it being on the Unreal engine or not, but I remember similar issues with Lost Oddysey. Maybe these issues will be resolved once I install the game on the new dash.
Despite these things though, I'm really liking it. The story seems interesting and voice acting isn't bad. Battle system is standard turn based, with some twists, which might get more complex later on. Somehow I just really love the atmosphere that has been presented so far. Some things, such as art design is very similar to what we've seen in FFXII. In towns you get icons above NPCs to indicate chat options and type of vendors too.
On top of these things there are some additions that I've wanted JRPGs to standardize for a very long time, like being able to save anywhere you like! And no random battles (although I realize there have been more and more JRPGs doing this lately). There's tons of convenience built in, like your characters healing fully after each fight (I assume its so that epic "wars" later on wont get frustrating). Travelling between cities can be done on the fly through the map, you can even quick travel between different sections of a city.
Overall I'm already liking it more than most of the new generation JRPGs so far. There's no Japanese voice options, but I haven't been annoyed by the voice acting yet either, so I'm not bothered by it.

"ok, no Japanese language option, the game also has serious frame rate issues while in what i call 'cgi mode', as soon as you drop to 'in-game mode' the frame rate issues disappear, only to re-appear as soon as more than a few people/creatures appear.
Unfortunately that's not all: the drive constantly chugs while in the same 'cgi mode'.
However, while I used a verb I burnt it at very high speed so the frame rate issues could be a result of that as opposed to inherent problems."
I will be interested to hear other feedback.

@ twobells - what is "CGI" mode you speak of ? 10x
Ok, so i played about an hour of the game. Very very dissapointed so far in nearly all aspects - story, presentation, graphics and performance.
The game has MASSIVE stuttering and constant 1 second freezes/pauses during battles. Basically every single turn has like 3 or so annoying pauses. The pop ups and framerate issues are almost as bad as in Mass Effect. The realtime cutscenes have serious framerate issues and frankly are not that good looking anyway. When there are more than a few characters on screen and some action involved they use prerendered cutscenes (hence the 2 DVDs).
Most of the story so far is told with horribly animated conversations just like in the PS1 era, it is clearly they spent as little as they could on this game. The high production values one would expect from a Square RPG are almost non-existant in the story portions.
And why the f*** are the developers still using this engine (UE3) i can not understand. Every single game that uses it has the same problems, yet more games with even more of the same problems are released. Do they even beta test these games ? Not even Epic managed to get rid of the pop ups and stutterings and framerate issues, but at least they are not that distracting due to the nature of their games which don't have constant camera and scenery shifting.
What the hell are these guys thinking i can not imagine... At least fool the gamer and spend the budget on the first hour of the game, make us think it is really good, not really bad. Who the hell cares if the second DVD is the greatest peice of gaming ever made if i can't even force myself through the first few hours of the first ?
