i know the game is very old and got bad ratings, but those who are interested in a game development process:

More Info about the Romero / Daikatana Timeline :

http://rome.ro/games_daikatana.htm

the pre alpha :
Daikatana Pre-Alpha #1

Four and a half years after its release, the Daikatana fanatics of the world shall now view the fledgling team's first two months of work. It's nothing awesome but it's a snapshot of our game in development at the very beginning with a team that had only two members survive the development process: myself and Shawn Green, who became the fifth and final lead programmer on Daikatana.

Make sure to read the DOC (or TXT) file before running it!

Why bother posting this crap? Who cares about John "failure" Romero and his lame attempts at creating a game?

The only thing you can learn through Daikatana is how to NOT develop a game!

The only problem with daikatana was the speed, games at that time wasn't ready for the extremely fast gameplay that daikatana was, so it floped, Im going to keep a close eye on this one.

Well first of all, the game was delayed over and over again, so it came out late and looked somewhat outdated, a problem most delayed games have. The second problem of the game was the feature list. During development Romero promsied a bunch of features, wich were not implemented in the retail releases. That was a dissapointment, and even worse, some of the new innovative features actually sucked in the game. And don't forget the glorious first patch they released right after the game hit the market. It could only be installed with a full install of the game (wonder what the other two installs were for Confused ) and then came the best part, most users saw a error message that the game has not the expected version to update Laughing
So to sum it up, the game was overhyped thanks to clever marketing, then delayed for ages and turned out as a mediocre game, wich reminds me of d3 wich was pretty much the same, although d3 turned out to be a commercial success due to it's franchise name.

As one of the minority that actually completed it, the game is insanely long, and content packed to the max, so there are good and even great parts,
but sadly, there are a ton of mediocre parts all around the good bits Laughing

If you care about early 3d FPS era, you can still enjoy it.

Episodes 2 and 3 are a lot of fun, but the game only picks up after a few hours of crap content.

episode 4 kinda goes crappy again. but at that point, you will have upgraded your stats or weapons, so its still fun.

I still have the original daikatana cd rom that i snatched from my highshool room mate in the states. he bought it but never played it Laughing

You're not alone my Neona Razz

Like the Witchy said, the game is a strange cocktail of different emotions, but it still manages to be somewhat enjoyable if you forget about the name and the old unfulfilled promises. Still better than many on-rail cinematisauces released these days! Laughing

I wonder if ten years from now, we'll say the same about Alien Colonial Marines.
