Colin McRae: DiRT 2 Interview
Codemasters dish the DiRT on it's off-road sequel.
by Martin Robinson, IGN UK
UK, November 19, 2008 - DiRT was one of the first wave of racing titles on the current generation of consoles, and to this day it remains one of the best looking games for either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 – and it was no slouch behind the wheel either, it's careful blend of off-road simulation and arcade handling providing an extremely satisfying racer. So we were a little excited to hear that a follow-up was in the works, and Colin McRae: DiRT 2's executive producer Gavin Raeburn provided the pace notes as we sought out what to expect from the sequel.
IGN: First of all, could you tell us about the decision to retain the McRae name for this game following his tragic death in 2007?
Gavin Raeburn: The decision was made jointly between Codemasters and the McRae family. His ventures into events such as the X-Games, Dakar Rally and the Race of Champions have inspired us to look at events covering the extremes of off-road motorsport. This is where we're taking the series with DiRT 2 and Colin will play a part in that. DiRT 2 will be a great tribute, and we'll be revealing more about this over the coming months.
Rally cars in Battersea? DiRT 2 is going to provide an extreme take on off-road racing.
IGN: Last time we saw the EGO engine in GRID it was looking pretty spectacular – how much room for improvement was there for its third outing in DiRT 2?
Gavin Raeburn: We made key improvements to the EGO engine during the GRID project which lifted the quality of the game to a level we were very happy with. The development team have learnt a lot from the development of GRID, and have strengthened massively in their ability to get the most out of the hardware, notably pushing SPU usage on PS3, improving multi-core performance on Xbox 360 and adding PC specific features and technology. In DiRT 2, we're building on these changes to the engine, adding more physical modelling of the environment, improving lighting and shadowing, and broadening the use of our streaming system to allow much higher texture detail. Overall these changes mean we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the hardware as much as possible, and we're confident in our ability to lift the quality bar again.
IGN: The career progression was an excellent part of GRID – will there be a similar mode in DiRT 2?
Gavin Raeburn: Absolutely, the single-player experience is a very important part of our games. For DiRT 2, we wanted to create a journey for the player which encapsulated the spirit of off-road racing – it's about travelling the world in your RV, hitting off-road festivals and building your rep as a driver. Along the way you'll build friendships with the stars of the off-road world – like Travis Pastrana and Ken Block – and these relationships help you move up the ladder. If you get on well with someone like Ken Block, he'll invite you to cooler events and even offer to team up with you from time to time.
IGN: Likewise, the rewind function in GRID worked brilliantly – is that something that's being integrated in DiRT 2?
Gavin Raeburn: We're proud of the replay technology we have within our engine, and you'll certainly see fully featured replays in DiRT 2. We're going to include an improved version of the Flashback feature that was developed for GRID too. I think everyone who played DiRT will have had an unfortunate incident with a tree or rock at some point!
After criticism of the first game, expect DiRT 2's online mode now to be fully featured.
IGN: The online features in the original DiRT felt a little compromised – is there going to be significant changes to the multiplayer for the sequel?
Gavin Raeburn: It's all new. You'll see competitive online racing in all race types, plus a progressive reward system and community features which we'll talk more about in coming months.
IGN: With so many disciplines of off-road motorsport included, how do you manage to produce a cohesive package?
Gavin Raeburn: We have to strike a balance. We don't want to restrict what the player can do by saying "car X can only drive on track Y", but on the other hand we don't want to break the believability of the game's career progression with mismatched opponents. In DiRT 2 we'll be going further, looking at game mechanics that transcend race disciplines and vehicles to provide that cohesion. We'll reveal more details in this area soon.
IGN: And being the huge F1 fans that we are, we've got to ask – how is work going with the F1 game, and when can we expect to see anything of it?
Gavin Raeburn: The F1 project is progressing well, although it will be a while before we start showing it. In the meantime, the F1 team have a blog on our community website with which you can stay up to date with developments.
Colin McRae: DiRT 2 is coming out in 2009 - keep an eye on IGN for a full preview in the near future.

GRiD is neither, it's great on it's own though. State of the art graphics, amazing handling and "feeling". Just finish a few races and you'll be hooked.

GRID is a very different game from DiRT and NFS (very, very, very different from NFS. It contains basically none of the retarded things about NFS). It is fundamentally incomparable to NFS, seriously.
Also, it has some of the most beautiful menus ever devised for a videogame. Just FYI.

GRID is an awesome racer. It's really the first driving game that really brings excitement back to racing. Great physics engine that's a nice hybrid between Arcade and Sim, just enough for you to play with (Allowing the rear end to come out) I can't praise the "Feel" of the game enough, it seriously feels near perfect driving the cars in the cockpit view. It puts a lot of other games to shame with everything put together, graphics, driving mechanics, etc.
PLAY IT!
Also, I thought the dev's dropped the Colin Mcrae name due to him passing away? I'm surprised they hung onto it as I expected it to be called DIRT 2.

ok, grabbing it now
and i think, if they had dropped the name, it would have been somewhat shitty sounding for the game. And i guess his family / widow would find use for the licencing money for the name as well...
cnZ, i love you too

Very good news, seems like racing genre of 2009 has been saved, since I'm pretty sure another horror called NFS will pop up in fall. *shivers*

Grid didn't have too much bloom, and the little that was still there could be disabled. The textures were also great.

Well, they do say they are going to use the advanced features from Grid... Besides, Dirt wasn't that bad. What was bringing it down was the awful performance.

So you haven't heard of the F1 game they are working on?

Holy shit. This may possibly be the best F1 game ever made given what they accomplished with GRID. Imagine their near perfect cockpit view while driving a F1 car at 180+!!!
Can't wait.

I think people are expecting a little more than good cockpit models with F1... One glance at the forum is enough to see the serious F1 gamers want a serious game, and it appears the Coddies are about to give it to us.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. Their cockpit view = total immersion given how great the driving model was in GRID.
EDIT: LoL when I said "Near perfect cockpit" I wasn't referring to the rendering of it. I'm talking about the experience inside the cockpit with how the car behaves and how true to life it will be. Should have clarified.

Oh, sure yeah, I completely agree, but I have to admit, I loved the idea of Dirt more than Grid, and the cockpits in Dirt, with the car jumping and breaking down, it just felt more immense. But sure, the Formula 3 races inside with the cockpit were pure fun as well.

I personally think DIRT did a horrible job in portraying real off roading. The off road surfaces were basically pavement colored brown and as smooth as glass. With all these games making such huge technological advancements a rally game needs to come out with real off road surfaces that has deviations/ditches/rocks/shit which affects the balance and travel of the car/suspension. You can't make a off road racer and watch the replay to see artificial spring recoil because the road itself sure as hell isn't causing that. Because of this you could play DIRT as you would any circuit racing game because it really wasn't as convincing as it should be.
All of the inertia from the cockpit view in DIRT was there for the experience but really didn't represent what you were driving on. I installed DIRT last week and am kinda upset at how dull and lame the off roading itself is.
Only two games incorporated a some what decent (And still not THAT great) dirt/mud/gravel surfaces and those were Richard Burns and believe it or not Sega Rally Revo (On certain stages) I wish DIRT 2 uses a deformation system that affects the behavior of the car. If a silly game like Sega Rally can do it I sure hope DIRT 2 does it too.

But from what I remember, the track deformation you talk about was only for the visuals and for more rumbling on the 360 controller... I did miss it in Dirt afer playing the Sega gamer, but it was nowhere near as deep. Maybe because I have zero experience with off-road driving, and maybe because I was looking for a semi-Arcade semi-Sim racing, I just loved Dirt. Grid was alright too, and I played it much more (mainly due to a much better and optimized engine), but Dirt was my favorite, and I hope they just do Dirt 1 with Grid engine.
