Quote:
A market research survey has listed the possible extras that could be heading to the PlayStation Network in 2010

Kotaku has posted images of the survey, sent by IPSOS Online Research, which details potential prices and premium services. The document begins with the opening spiel:

"Sony is considering offering a premium PlayStation Network subscription in the future. The subscription offering would provide new premium features you could choose to pay for and are in addition to the features currently available for free such as access to online multiplayer gaming (current features would remain free)."

“Token Wagering could enable players to put a stake of virtual lucre on the outcome of games”

We knew as much from recent reports on Sony's 2010 strategy, but now we have specific features being detailed: Token Wagering could enable players to put a stake of virtual lucre on the outcome of games, while Cloud Storage Space would enable players to save games online instead of on their hard drive.

Additional ideas include loyalty reward programs, automatic updates, an online music service, Hulu TV on demand (that'll be US only then, iPlayer fans), member-only game content, discounts and more.

Full game one-hour trials and cross-game chat are also mentioned as possible premium service features. Mooted prices range from $5 a month/$30 a year, to $10 a month/$70 a year. More than Microsoft's current Gold Account fees. We're not sure we'd want to pay that just for cross-game chat, which is certainly the most sought after of the potential premium services.

Sony declined to comment on the survey, but that doesn't stop you letting us know what you think...

Some it looks really good. I know I will be paying for the premium service. Very Happy

So they're going to be charging XBL-Gold prices for... what now? Demos (pay for demos? NO. Fuck you) and cross-game chat?

.... hahahahahahaha! And people whined at MS for charging for their service? No doubt PS3 fanboys (All twenty of them) will run out and pay any fee $ony charges.

I don't really mind at all. If it features things that I'm willing to pay for then I'll pay for it. If it features things that I don't care about or don't feel like paying money to use, then I won't pay.
As long as playing games online is free I don't really see a problem with charging for extra features.

It's a good model and I definitely prefer this over the alternatives, such as beeing forced to pay, or not having any paid subscription type at all which leads to too little features as the money they spend on maintainence, development and support is obviously very limited when it doesn't bring in any money directly.

And sabin, don't bash this before it's even announced what features and what prices this is actually gonna have. Saying they're crazy and outragous when all you have to go on is a survey doesn't really make much sense Smile

I'm not bashing the service, I'm bashing the fanboys. All the Sony fanboys bitched and whined at MS for XBL - and now Sony is releasing a premium (read: PAY FOR) PSN? Yeah...... let's see if they still bitch, shall we?

You're being a fanboy because if you actually read the article it says; "current features would remain free". When people bashed XBL it was in relation to the way XBL works compared to the current PSN model, not the suggested premium service above (which would be entirely optional). Looking at some of the features listed if they are indeed accurate then I would have to admit I'm tempted (in spite of my aversion to any console service subscription - which would be a new thing for me). The 3 year warranty sounds especially interesting, lol.

LOL. Yeah, whatever mate You're getting all that "new" stuff for a price premium.. well guess what? XBL has most of that ANYWAY and has done for years. Yeah, I'm being the fanboy honest.

Bleh. Typical Sony fanboy arrogance; Sony can charge and it's GREAT!!!1111 but if MS do? They're SCUM!!!111

This thread stinks of fanboy.

Pros :
Free Access to PSOne Classics .... READ IT AGAIN ALL PSONE GAMES FOR FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and i know they don't need PSN after the download so WOW (except allready have those on my PC LULZ so i don't fucking care about this feature on the PS3)

CONS :
Extended Console Warranty 3 Years (wait they have to be kidding somthing that should be free from the start is now a payed protection fee ... going back to the ye old xbox360 crap extended shit frees eh)
Access to Beta Games (wait so Beta codes are now OUT , LULZ )
Token Wagering (oh yeah they will now let you PAY REAL MONEY to win if you are a noob and are getting pwnd in MW2 ... so pay us and we will eehhhmm make you invincible for a time to let you win .... what the fuck)
Member Only In-game Content (THE FUTURE OF DLC ... making a full game on a BD 50 gig disk - check .... after 50% of the game present a BIG ASS POP UP to PAYZ MONEYZ TO PLAY - check... WTF is this )
Trophy Alerts (oh right , info abut what trophy's and how to get them ... should it be free guess now this info is a pay up bitch to know)
Cloud Storage Space for Games (WHO IS THEY right fucking mind would storage they save on a corporate HDD server .... WHO?!!)
Automatic Downloads and Updates (OH Right so when a producer/developer will fuck up they game we will be forced to pay for patches ... WTF is this shit another GOTHIC GOLD shit )
Loyalty Program Rewards
Facebook Connectivity (ISN'T this allready on the PS3 with the 3.51 update so what the fuck now they will remove it with the next update to make it a payed feature..... doesn't care a flying shit about it but taking something and making a pay this is a NONO )
Netflix Access Without Disc (wait so they are letting you FINALLY download the installation program from the store and they are making YOU PAY FOR IT , when they are sending those BD install disks for free LULZ HAHAHA)
Customer Service Priority Access (YOU : Eh Sony repair service my ps3 broke down will you fox it , SONY: Yes but you will have to wait for it like....5 months before we will ship the repaired one , YOU : WHAT , SONY: But yeah if you would have our premium service the repair would only take 3 days.... YOU: I hate you ....................... ; PLus they they will make the same crap as on xbox360 GOLD wait 10-15 days to get the demo when others play it NOW )
Exclusive Experiences with Sony Brands (WTF?? so if my TV is not fucking shit Bravia the PS3 will self destruct LULZ haha)

OK BUT now for real :

The things i care the most are : Extended Console Warranty 3 Years , Member Only In-game Content , Automatic Downloads and Updates

but yeah the "Member Only In-game Content" is a fucking joke if you ask me because you will be getting those for free if you buy the Exclusive collectors editions ... but the big 50% ingame breaking pop ups give me the willies ,
The extended Warranty should be free since the "NEW SLIMS" have CHEAP BD DRIVES in them that are more affected for a break down then the OLD ones ,
and last but not lest patches should be free

I'm finding it hard to see any good points that you have made amongst your speculation, Spiderman.

Standard warranty for electronics is usually 1 year from purchase. The only reason there is 3 years on the 360 is because of the high fail rate on older models.

I would assume you get priority with BETA games, but maybe it will only be for people with the premium service.

Token Wagering and your MW2 comment is ridiculous.

I would have thought the 'member only in-game content' would be free to those with the premium service.. We will have to wait and see.

Trophy Alerts - who cares.

Cloud storage is a good idea because you will always have backups of your saves and I don't see what your problem with it is.

Automatic Downloads and Updates - ofc we won't have to pay for patches.

Facebook Connectivity - all current features will remain free Wink

Netflix - US only.idk

Customer Service Priority Access = free phone calls and more staff to look after you.

Exclusive Experiences with Sony Brands. Who knows what this really means.

I don't like this, there is bound to be lots of games with a feature that will only be available to premium psn users, but would absolutely be there only because revenues from ultimate psn subscriptions allow extended programming time.

Oh and Sabin is being a fanboy. Very Happy

Yet it's still the most expensive component in there.

None of this is confirmed, it's all based on a survey Sony sent out. I would expect cross-game chat to be free for all users. I mean I haven't done any market research myself, but I'd (token) wager it wouldn't be much of a selling point, and only serve to antagonise potential premium subscribers. It would be smart to add something like this for free users, and tempt them with other features like this;

"By far the most attractive premiums are full title trials, which give the user one hour access to full PlayStation 3 games, and free access to PSOne Classics, PSP minis, and premium themes."

"We've contacted Sony for comment on the survey, but have yet to hear back as of press time. Just keep in mind that companies regularly test the waters by sending out questionnaires like these, and they by no means represent any concrete plans on Sony's behalf."

"It seems as if they simply want to gauge customer reaction to the various plans and features."

The PSP Minis and the PSOne titles are DEFINITELY the seller for me, no doubt about it. The rest? It's either just fluff that looks good on paper (but should really be second nature) or stuff that makes you think "WTF? Yeah, way to treat your customers like shit" (re: member-only ingame content + 3yr warranty)

I'm not being a fanboy because I'm not bashing the service; I'm bashing the fanboys who whined and pissed and moaned about MS charging for Live ("Sony has PSN for free!! WEeheehehehee") and are now, un-shockingly, applauding Sony for introducing premium/pay-for content.

I would say so. You argument holds no water. SONY is attempting to leverage the good will it has with its current installed user base (which lags only behind the XBOX360 by about 6/7 million users), by offering up actual premium content that is WORTH paying for - nevermind nowhere does it say you are going to lose ANY of the access you currently enjoy TODAY, they are simply trying to put together a premium package that is WORTH the time (and financial) investment. You are most definitely being the quintessential "fanboi" in regards to your distaste of Sony's business model for premium content.

Fanboi says what? And I will repeat myself - your argument holds water. I will now take your hand through the steps why: you are trying to flip the script on the so-called "SONY fanboys" for lambasting Microsoft for the Xbox Live service because it charges for access to gaming essentially, and not doing the same to what SONY is proposing. Your point falls through for one fundemental reason: the same access that PS3 users currently enjoy (which I would say is maybe 80% of what XBOX users currently have) isn't going anywhere. The fundemental ONLINE gaming experience will remain EXACTLY the same.

As for the whol "applauding Sony for introducing premium. . ." - uhm hello, they've ALWAYS had premium content on the PS3. I have spent more than a few of my hard earned dollars purchasing premium content from SONY in the way of DLC, home add-on's, dynamic screensavers. . .etc. Sorry, but this isn't even close to a new development, and anyone thunderstruck that a company is willing to dedicate a team to producing premium content for its users is beyond stupid. The difference between SONY and MS at this point, is that with MS you have to pay just to get into the club, and then pay some more to get into the VIP section; SONY lets everyone in, lets everyone get a free taste of the VIP section - and then charges if you wanna bang any of the ladies.

So no. The two situations are NOT the same, and the underlying argument fueling your misguided sense of schadenfreude is baseless.

But yea, go on an quadruple post because you think no one "gets it" - that'll show em!

charging for some premium services should be Ok but this is all depends on price & what u get,As for cross gaming chat this shoud be free & stay free,A subscibtion is only gonna appeal to some hardcore users at first so if cross gaming chat is one of the reasons you paid the subscribtion charge your gonna be pretty pissed if only a small percentage(if any) of your PSN friends only subscibe too you would be paying a charge & not be able to still use cross gaming chat

I honestly don't think he understands this , Its the most childish argument ever . The Thing I see that is most important being sony Will still provide free online gaming while ms charge for it ( the most lucrative feature of xbl which imho by default should be silver as its p2p )

he's claiming that ms implemented these features years ago ( if he read the list he will see they haven't ) yet calls anyone who defends it a fanboy ? I can't see any irony in that statement at all

I was just invited to do a survey by Sony. Not the same as the one this post is about but it had 2 questions about paying for online services.

 Spoiler:

I ticked 'somewhat likely' thinking ticking that would mean I would progress onto other questions, but it didn't Sad

They must want to know why people wouldn't pay.
