Well i decided to install leopard (APPLE MAC OSX LEOPARD V10 5 ISO-OSX i think its the latest version), but i have no idea where to start. So i have a few questions.
First of all, will it even work on non mac laptop (i know it might sound stupid to some, but i seriously have no idea since i have never used that OS), like will i find compatible drivers for my laptop (video, audio, wirless) and can i even install it. I have an hp dv5t series laptop with nvidia 9600M GT (which i think the latest macbooks pro come with, so i think i should find drivers for that.
If above things are possible, how would i go about installing the OS itself. Is it the same as in windows, just burn on a dvd, boot from it and follow the instructions? or is it more intricate. Also will i be able to burn the above release using windows since it uses some dmg (i think) and then boot it?
I just want to see what the hype is all about, is it really that much better than windows. Its my school laptop so i dont really care about games, just basic applications.
Thanks for any help.

I'm about to head out so ill just give you some quick answers you can research yourself. Firstly, OSX is protected by hardware DRM, it has been bypassed but it does make it slightly more painful to install on non apple hardware. There are websites and ISO builds dedicated to installation on x86 machines (as they are known despite it being a somewhat inaccurate statement).. Google around for hackintosh and OSX86. The most well known of sites is http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page ..

Due to this issue hardware compatibility is often a massive problem for people, so much so that most people serious about doing this buy specific hardware for the job that is known to be compatible. The best bet is to check the compatibility charts on that wiki and see what matches up.. You should be ok with graphics and general use but sound / wifi / networking / usb may prove to be a problem.

As for if it is better than windows, well no its not, but its also not worse. Its just different. OSX is a Unix derivative with a base kernel based on BSD. Due to this it tends to be more stable than Windows and has some power user positives that Windows lacks (acess to a shell is always nice..). With this however comes the same downsides that *nix operating systems suffer.. There is a lack of large corp commercial support (so no MS Office for you!) and obviously, very few games will work on the OS. You may also find other popular windows applications have no OSX alternative, although this really isnt that big a deal these days.

Hope that helps.

There is MS Office for Mac, same as there is Adobe Photoshop, CS suite etc. This is why Mac OS X is much more preferable when choosing between Windows and *NIX systems Smile

Thanks a lot sYn, it does help. As Soon as i get back from school i'll take a look at that website. And yeah i saw commercials for MS office for mac. And I also realize that mac isnt exactly a gaming OS, thats why i'll try to install it on my school laptop (so at least i can appear as cool as those mac users Smile ). Just want to see whats the OS is all about, but it seems like its a lot more trouble than it worth. Still will have nothing to do during winter break, so I might check it out.

If your hardware is supported, it is really as simple as installing on a normal Mac. What happens is there are several releases, each has its own drivers incorporated, so you want to first see what release is the most compatible with your hardware. As long as you have more mainstream hardware, the more chances you have to have supported hardware (yay for Apple). You can check what release you need in the Wiki Syn posted, but it's mostly generic and incomplete when it comes to hardware. Where you really want to go is http://www.insanelymac.com/ and their forums, and search there for guides, hardware compatibilities and workarounds. You can also ask questions there and get proper responses.

About the OS itself, what can I say? I was pretty impressed with it and was ready to put it on my laptop full time, but the X1300 Mobility Radeon was not supported properly, so that was a no-go. Would I put it on my desktop PC? No, mainly because of games, video editing and encoding and Visual Studio. But it's good enough for everyday work, and runs incredibly fast too (you can make a custom made PC with much better hardware than Apple's, that is supported by the release, with a much much much lower price tag).

Yeah thats one reason why im getting a non mac laptop. I bought HP laptop for 1k, that has better specs than the newest macbook pro but costs two times less. I realize that macbook pro is a solid piece of hardware but IMO it is grossly overpriced. Guess thats why they make it as hard as possible to install OSX on non mac products, everyone would just buy cheaper laptop and then OSX separately.
Thanks for the info Leo.

If you have an nVidia or Intel graphics device, and an OK CPU, you will most probably be just fine. At most, the integrated webcam won't power on or something, but this is BS. Core functionality should be intact.
