I don't post here, but I need to vent with some (hopefully) like-minded individuals.
My wife entered a business partnership for a new company. He's providing the capital, mostly, and equipment and stuff, she's got the experience in the field. He wants a website, along the lines of ecommerce, but it's mostly a front end for client db/invoice system. It'll all be used as part of a customs border thing. Anyway, of course she approaches me and I saw it coming, but I nearly choked laughing. "He'll pay you $100 for the website". OH GOLLY GEE! $100! For a client support/invoice database, that the employees will require access to locally...so at least 2 custom front ends....php, sql, all dat shite. I told her flat out he better be prepared to add a zero to that number, because NO ONE would design a whole site for $100. That doesn't even cover HOSTING for fuck sakes!
So whatever. I didn't hear back about it. I told em I'll do a slap job BASIC company website for $100, but they have to find hosting and domain registration themselves. Well, she's family and really needs this thing to work, and she promised alot of...stuff to get me to do it, and I agreed. After all, if this thing really turns out successful, I'll quit my job and go on her payroll as IT.
We sat down today, she had gotten a link from a friend for a hosting site. Fair enough. OOOPS! Shared Hosting! "But we don't want to spend more than $100/yr" she whines. FUCK! Is everyone this retarded?! $100/yr will give you the SSL certificate ONLY! GRRRRRRRRRR Damn woman this better be fucking worth it!
Using my whiz-bang web magic, I find a decent fairly cheap host offering a good deal on VPS, two IPs, yadda yadda. It's a small startup company that isn't initially going to need alot of bandwidth or server power, so it'll do.
(The reason I want SSL and dedicated is because the information clients need for their accounts is PRETTY DAMN DETAILED. We're talking vehicle VIN#'s, Driver liscense #'s....serious IDENTITY THEFT shit). I don't want a shared SSL because it'll look like shit to the client (huh why'd I navigate away from their domain....uhh is this really safe?). Yah right.
So I try explaining all this to her, and I told her flat out THIS IS WHY I DON'T DO THIS FOR A JOB. 'Normal' people think the web is fucking magic. They have no god damn clue how much work it is to register domains, certificates, hosting, website development...
Oh. So this company so far consists of 3 people. My wife, her partner, and another person. So I ask her: who's gonna run the server? You know, setup domains, install software, configure the database, setup email....you know, IT stuff?
Yah. That's what I thought. Seriously, $100.
(i haven't done web stuff in at least 3 or 4 year, so I'm a bit rusty on html versions and stuff. You guys have links to some refresher material? I mean, I don't wanna start laying out a site with tables and have someone go 'lol tables? are you for real? div is where it's at bro!')

100 bucks for something like that? Well, good luck to your wife....I doubt she'll find anyone that will design an entire site for 100.
And its true, what about the IT stuff? They want someone to run all that for free?
Maybe you should get them a web design book for dummies or something that explains how much things cost and what goes into developing what they want.
Maybe then they'd be more realistic about things.

People like that don't know anything about what goes on behind the scenes when developing a website.
So I'm guessing the $100 figure was said out of ignorance.
If so then introduce them to a person/people (not family) who are authorities/experienced in website development. You're just inquiring about their services, not necessarily going all the way to hire them.
Though outsourcing such a service might be wise since you said you're a bit rusty and you also want the job to be done professionally to minimize maintenance headaches later on.
That should bring your company partners back to reality.

Honestly...
I would tell them to fuck off. I realize you think that isn't an option but fuck, that is going to take hours. My cost is $75 an hour at the least.

Hahahahaha, ok I can't fucking understand her partner. I mean I don't wanna badmouth the guy, he is the financial backbone, even if he is a miser! She had a meeting with him today to bring him up to speed on the hosting situation, and tried to explain to him what was done. He replied "we don't need SSL or certificates, wtf, it'll just get in the way of our clients, and besides, they're willingly giving us their info all the time why does it need to be secure?!" The guy is a fucking tool. He wants a portal for clients to log into and have accounts holding info like Passport #, Liscense #, yadda yadda...and he wants it all travelling plaintext through the internet! Who needs to encrypt that info?!?!
What a fucking tool. At least my wife and her co-worker understand.
Now on to the fun bits...setting up my...err...her new server
i can has computar?!

The guy is clearly a total moron. Without encryption he will get done over so fast the law suits from all the people who's details he lost will be on his door step before he even knows its happened. You may want to have your wife point out just how fucked he would be if the data gets stolen, then explain exactly how easy it would be to steal when unencrypted.
Also, for a decent system $1000 is far too cheap. If someone asked me to do that they would be looking at a $5000 - $10000 bill. That would include 0 support after setup.
You should also consider getting the website pen tested on completion, the type of data its handling is sensitive enough to make it a very worthwhile investment.
