Hi all! So I think the crashes are only found in the no-steam version of the game (aka running from hl2.exe).

Here's a guide to run from Steam itself.

First install steam and let it update. Create a new profile (it would be a shame to let them catch your real account and ban it). Then exit steam and apply a steam crack (Google for it). Now don't start Steam yet. Go to "...\Steam\steamapps"
You need to put these files in here:

(Google will help)

Next, you need to create a directory called "common" and inside "left 4 dead". Now cutpasta the content of your non-steam game. It should look like this:

If you want the dedicated server, should also extract here. Now run Steam, and you should see this:

Right click on the game, properties, go to the Updates tab and:

This will make sure you can still play the game if Valve releases an update, and it's not yet available. Now, I've read somewhere that you shouldn't run the game from the list directly (I haven't tried), so go to [in the menus] "Games" -> "Add a non-Steam..." and add the "left4dead.exe" from the "...\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead" directory.

All done. I've head people who had many crashes, then ran with this method and never had crashes again. Very Happy

okay, i start:

i downloaded steam, created account, let it update, exited, downloaded the crack, applied it, downloaded these ncf files, put them inside steamapps, did a new folder called 'common', and right now am copying Left 4 Dead (SKIDROW rls) from Program Files to there.

so far so good?

besides, i noticed you have "left 4 dead" in small letters. is it important? is steam case sensitive bitch?

yes

Windows isn't case sensitive (i.e. you can't have "DirA" and "dIRa" in the same path), so Steam can't be. Smile

As long as your "common" folder looks like mine, you'll be fine.

Something's missing. Do you have the NCF files in place?

edit:

are you sure this method works with SKIDROW release? i did clean reinstall for both steam and l4d, but it still gives me this download paused bs.

i saw your content seems to be little bit different from skid's

I'm not really sure about the Skidrow release, but my method worked on several different releases (each of my friends had a different release).

well, i read that you can avoid the crashes by turning off dual core optimization and running it in window mode (no borders) which means a lot worse performance:x

Yes i did it and the crashes were gone but the performance got a massive hit almost unplayable (for me).

That's why I said to cancel automatic updates, and to run as non-Steam app. The patch will come out eventually, but for now you can still play the regular version.

Nope, I don't think it works with the Skidrow release... They might have removed some files. BTW, if you are getting a Steam release, make sure to get the updated files as well.
