last week i installed a new version of XP sp3 on my pc. the good thing about it (except the november updates) was that i no longer required to install most of the drivers. it camed with the Nvidia drivers installed (v178.13 - latest). but right after installing it i discovered that there was something wrong with my IT connection. everything regarding IT was working very very damn hard. barely moving if it was moving (i was unable to view not even Nforce site which requires just a tinny little connection). i knew something was wrong when i pressed the repair connection button. after starting the process it gave me an error. and it sounds like this (sorry, no pics cos i can barely send this message):
Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could not be completed: Clearing the DNS cache.
what the heck is this? i looked over the net for an answer and i can't say i really understood something (though i have some knowledge in o.s. and pc's i barely know a few things about networks of any kind)
now, while i am writting, the same error popped out after clicking on the repair button, my IT connection seems Ok yet it's not. i can barely access any site.
mainly i think this has something to do with O.S. though i can't say that 100% sure.
so does anyone know what is this?

You could try doing
ipconfig /flushdns
in a cmd window to see if that gives a more useful error message.

you get the above if the dns-service isnt running or set to not cache dns-requests, if i remember correctly

if your internet is slow, it might be because you have set no or the wrong dns-servers. Check with your provider what the right ones are

what is an "IT connection" supposed to be anyway?
internet? a network card?
install appropriate drivers and make sure it's up to date
you shouldn't trust windows reference drivers to do shit
install motherboard and video drivers as usual

when i use that command i receive the following:
Windows IP Configuration
Could not flush the DNS Rezolver Cache: Function failed during execution
.
i also made a call to my internet provider and he told me to uninstall the kaspersky internet Security protocol from my connection. i did that and it seems everything is working ok but that error regarding DNS cache is still there! the operator i talked with said it's a PC problem. so, how do i kill Very Happy that error? damn.... until i installed that dumb new XP everything was working pretty good... no errors SadSad

yeap. i think those installed Nvidia drivers f***ed up my connection. because that DNS error started after installing that version of XP. until then i had no problems when "repairing" the network. at least not when it was working .... during the same day i installed that Xp i also formated C: drive (after seeing the problem) and installed Xp using the previous versions cd. i am using it since then!

guys, it seems that my providers sever is seeing me as Ok but still i can barely connect (about 5min every 50-60min). once i uninstalled my firewall, the DNS problem dissapeared but now i am receving a problem at "renewing your IP address" every time i use the repair button for my connection. i must also say i have a modem for my connection!

the nvidia drivers most certainly did not fuck up your connection.

uninstall all the network/motherboard drivers that your tweaked xp had.
reinstall from your motherboard cd what needs to be installed.

and reboot after uninstalling, just to be sure.

i formated C: drive about 2 hrs after installing that tweaked Xp (AddaXp Black Edition -> you might know it since you're from RO). when i saw the problem i decided to reinstall Win from the cd i used at the previous install (sometime in april i think). and right now i am still using that XP sp3 (not the tweaked one... well this one is also a bit tweaked but it worked just fine untill that AddaXP). and as far as i know, nothing from AddaXP remained on C: drive!

you think something from AddaXP remained on my hdd and it could still block my connection?
i also made a few tests in "cmd prompt". i pinged both yahoo.com & rdslink.ro when i knew my connection is not working. well, surprise. yahoo had a 200-210ms response time and rdslink.ro 15-16ms. i simply don't get it

offtopic: sorry guys if i am not allowed to post name of O.S. but i hope i do get some help

did both of them. i am still waiting for them to show up.
anyway, found a few network related errors:
-Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 00*....
The following error occurred:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

-Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 00*.... The following error occurred:
The operation was canceled by the user (NOT Very Happy). Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

maybe they help. there is also another one pretty similar to this ones but in that it makes reference to the Nvidia Nforce Controller! i will keep looking for it....

now this is VERY VERY weird....
so far, as you know, i had some problems with my connection. first, DNS cache problems, then, after uninstalling KIS 8, most of the times, the repairing button for my connection gave an error at "renewing your IP address". anyway, i was unable to access any site at all. strange thing is that pinging in cmd prompt worked just fine, as if everything was in order.
today, after 4 days un strugle i decided to try one last thing.... i asked a friend for a network card (thinking my integrated one was faulty -> i was actually thinking my providers people were right), deactivated my integrated net-card, installed that one and .... ups, still not working (at all i must say). while using this card i received a message saying "limited or no connectivity". decided to remove it, reactivated my net-card and.... well, so far, it's been able to remain connected for about 5-10 min. after that, i have a msg in the Event Viewer:
TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.. the connection restores after i restart the PC.

and a new that seems related:
The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service terminated with the following error:
The class is configured to run as a security id different from the caller

eventually it seems i made my connection work. though i am not 100% sure, so far it seems to be OK.
anyway, i followed the advice of a friend who had, from what i can tell, the same problem, and formated the entire hdd. my connection is working right now (it's been up for about 1:30 hrs) but that thing "Failed to clear DNS cache" is still there. i have installed KIS 8 again (kinda used with it). and so far, i've noticed it's there only when a firewall/antivirus is installed. does anyone got any idea wtf should i do? or what could be the problem
my friend said it might be a virus of some kind since he's sharing the same connection with someone else's computer and when he plugged the cable on his computer he barely managed to access anything and only for about 5min (like me). plugging the cable at the other computer showed that the connection is fine.... do you guys have any knowledge about some kind of virus that could mess up DNS? or something regarding the web connection...
