If you are gonna play on-line with MAME go to god-weapons and get MAME32k 0.64 (Feb 3 2003). Its a version of MAME that includes Kaillera and is still the most popular version used online. I have to add that that version is not the best to play many of the shmups I've listed. In past I've used quite a few different version of MAME++ to get the best results. Also "GodWeapon's EmulinkerSF Server" still seems to be the most popular server, which is located in Virginia US, although they used to have one, right next door to me in Chicago.

If you still need recommendations for shumps other then those on mame, let us know. I'll dig something up. Although nothing comes to mind that is similar to Metal Slug, there are still quite a few good shooters for PC. You can start by looking in here http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26338
