Here is my strategy in dealing with Symantec Anti-Virus or INS, put it on after you have installed Windows. If you need to get rid of it then burn the system down (reformat). Symantec wraps itself so tight around your system you think somebody is squeezing your nuts! Sound a bit extreme but just trace through the gazillion keys it puts in your registry or the various files it places in/out of the Win install dir. I can not even remember the last system I had successful uninstall, without something getting jacked!

Remove both McAffe and Norton. Instead use either Kaspersky and Nod32. No anti virus prog beats these ones. For spyware use Lavasoft Adaware SE pro. To fix the rest of your OS problems do a 1-click maintainance with Tuneup utilities 2004. That app fixes most problems. On the other hand you will get spyware and viruses even if you put your soul in preventing them. Even Gates himself says that spyware is a serious problem with windows and it's a major glitch in the OS that allows them to easily install.

One other thing, forgot about this, if you are going to TRY and uninstall Norton Anti-Virus / INS make sure and boot into Safe mode and Disable all Symantec Services. That is something a did a while back that seem to help.
As for Microsoft Vs. Spyware that is what happens with a crappy browser (IE) coupled with ActiveX! Not that Spyware begins or ends there but it sure as hell has not helped.

Here's my tip (I know it's a bit controversial):
NEVER Install a product created by Norton.
(I know there are people who say it works fine for them)
Nod32 is the way.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.
