why not buy one from amazon and put your information into it, then wipe the info out of yours and put it int he box and return it to amazon. almost free that way minus a restocking charge.

Netgear routers all suck with the stock firmware. You need to upgrade it to DD-WRT firmware if possible. I bought a refurb Netgear WNR834B N-Router for $23 shipped. Been running great since last year. Netgear support sucks., I would never bother calling them.

I agree - fuck Netgear. Used to have a WGT624 - total piece of shit. That combined with one of their Wi-Fi USB dongles.. ugh, don't even wanna think about it.

A friend of mine got a NETGEAR wireless router and he can't achieve good speeds, transfer rates go up and down continuously when on wireless. It's fine on wired. It's supposed to be 54mbps or something ...
What the fucking shit. I told him to buy a Belkin router I liked but he didn't listen.
EDIT: Hardware update didn't help either.

Yeah, I noticed that as well but than again I barely use the wireless function (except for going online with my Wii) but the only other wireless thing I have is my laptop and if I use my laptop at home speed isn't that big an issue.
So I replaced my router with a Netgear switch that I had lying around, not the best solution but I suppose it'll do for the time being.
Btw I got that router from my ISP last november.
First thing I did was call my ISP and tell them to send me a new one because I thought I got it from them, they're supposed to replace it but nooooo, you gotta contact Netgear they said.
Never had that with my old ISP. They replaced my old d-link router withouth a second thought.
Fun story:
I wanted to get my gf's router because she basically doesn't need it but when I plugged her PC directly into her calbe modem the freaking power went out and I was like totally wtf?
But turns out, as soon as I plug the PC directly into the cable modem it blows one of her fuses in her main fuse box O.o
(mind you that doesn't happen when she's using her router)
So I thought fuck it because I couldn't find out why that was happening and wanted to reattach her router to the modem.
While doing that I touched the ethernet port and BAM I got a freaking electrical shock.
But not one of those "oops you toched something electrical" type of shocks, nope, that shock left a burn mark on my finger.
Granted, it's minimal but nethertheless.
I told my gf to call her ISP in the morning and tell them to send her a new one and if they try to act up she should just tell them that her boyfriend got a shock from that thing.
Fuck it, doesn't hurt too bad but I'll be damned if that wasn't disturbing.

@Rek
Not sure if this will be helpful but I had a router a while back and it gave me tons of trouble.
A tech at my ISP told me to go with a HUB and I did.
Since then, I haven't had any problems with the net or grabbing files or anything of that sort.
And there's no configuring or setup involved with a HUB. Plug and play essentially.
Check into it.
Cause I know from personal experience, routers cause so many problems.
I took mine to work and melted the fuckin thing after I got my HUB
So satisfying.
Also done that to 2 cell phones lol

and hubs offer no security

A router offers some advantages that a hub doesn't. It will act as a server meaning you don't need a PC on the network to act as the server wasting its recourses. It will act as a DHCP server adding security and ease of setup for the clients. To add a client all you need to do is install a NIC and plug in the CAT 5 cable and connect to the internet the router will assign it an IP address subnet mask and DNS server. Will also act a hardware firewall protecting your network from the internet. You can use the PCs one at a time without the need to have a server PC running(unless you need files from another PC)all PCs on the network are clients the router is the server. Using a router you need only one NIC per PC, using a hub depending on your setup you need two NICs in the server PC. The only disadvantage I have found is a router needs configured and a hub doesn't. With the proper software(Sybergen Sygate) a hub can function the same as a router offering a DHCP server NATS gateway firewall and a virtual NIC for the hub. The only draw back is you need a PC acting as server and host for the virtual NIC. The Linksys kit comes with Sybergen Sygate With 5 client licence 5 port hub 2 10/100 NICs 2 15ft CAT 5 patch cables. I couldn't get mine to work as explained above. I could only get it to work with 2 NICs in the server. You might have better luck. I still have it but bought a Linksys cable/DSL router. I like it a lot better. Once you get the router setup the rest is easy. |

Yeah but you can add security to your comp Plus my ISP has a monitoring system and such. Air tight ya know?
I prefer hub's.

not sure about switches, but a router works fine with a cable modem. get one of those. you'll only have to set it up once, and it shouldn't be too complicated either.

I suppose you haveN't read the rest of this thread? O.o
The point is that I don't HAVE a router right now but I'll get a new one in about two weeks...
I know routers work fine because I had one before it kicked the bucket.
@Lathieza:
both systems are running Vista, one's 64 bit though but that shouldn't make a difference

Why wait for 2 weeks on a router when you can get one in a store ??
But when both systems are vista its really cimple to install... i have it here running myself.
Do you have a crosslink network cable otherwise it won't work
Empty again
