Need advice, not really solid on AMD but it just seems the best option (moneywise):

Current Processor: AMD 6400+ Black Edition (3.2GHz, overheats and not even OC'd)
Replacement: AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750 2.7GHz

Current Motherboard: Abit AN-M2HD
Replacement Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H (rev. 1.0)

Current Case: Thermaltake Xaser II
Replacement Case: Cooler Master HAF 932 Black ATX Case

Current PSU: Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 550W
Replacement PSU: Corsair HX620W

Total Upgrade Cost: NZ$933.28/US$479.79

Will recycle HDD's, GFX (8800GT 512MB)and most likely RAM (Corsair CM2X1024-6400 4-4-4-15 2x1GB) and DVD Drive, crappy case needs to go, it was suppose to be a quick solution to need for more space but it sucks at keeping the heat down and it was situated in a bad place (a closed off corner, only place to put it :\) so the case is really the thing that needs the upgrade, the 6400+ overheats really easily so I had to buy a Zalman 9700LED (Think that's it, big copper fins on it) which takes up 2 RAM slots and this motherboard is complete shit, wasted $220 for the company to go under the next year and have heaps of problems before even getting an OS up and running, but now that there's a bit more range (want to take advantage of AM2+ and the ability to use DDR2 1066 but AMD motherboards really seem inferior (Obvious but my point is it still can't support 1066 in dual channel), oh well its cheaper. Power Supply doesn't really need replacing so that's not 100% just unsure about my current 1 is all, its stuffed up before, got a backup incase it happens again, don't really want to spend more than NZ$950/US$488.43, all of these parts are whats available locally (In Auckland, NZ), thanks in advance for any advice (Even an Intel solution, used this site for currency conversion).

looks good to me. CPU's are over rated unless your doing other than watching movies or games. I got a 4400 X2 939 socket that still rocks any game I throw at it.

the cpu you will be buying is great, is cheap, and will OC alot better than your current one, but its stock the same speed as your cpu, so to be honest i would get that mainboard you linked since its AM3 compatible, stick with your current cpu for a few months longer, and get the cheaper tripple cores of the new phenom 2 which will be a huge performance increase.
That money you could invest now into 4GB ram of 1066 speed ( the new phenoms are 1066 compatible ) the ram is dirt cheap, 50 euros for quality GSKILL, which will make your rig more future proof and will come in handy later this year when windows 7 is released which looks promesing ( im a vista hater for the record ).
But till you get a new cpu that ram will run at 800 speed no problemo.

i hope that helped

EDIT : not sure why you claim 1066 ram cant run in dual channel on AMD board , running 4GB now in dual channel on a gigabyte 790gx based board and a phenom 2

I forgot to mention that I'd personally wait for the new Phenom II X3's to come out that are AM2+ compatible

Quoted from Gigabyte: Note: Due to AMD AM2+ CPU limitation, DDR2 1066 is only supported by 1 dimm per channel. (Maybe I misunderstood what they meant)

I was gonna get a new CPU so I could use the 1066 asap and cause I thought my 6400+ might have some problems since it overheats so easily but that could just be the bad case but nothing else seemed to have the same problems, also any tips on getting my CPU out, last time I tried the thermal paste was rock solid and I could barely get it out, I do have thermal paste remover but does that damage the motherboard at all? Thanks again for the help.

Oh yeah, that means currently it will only cost me NZ$542.21/US$276.72 (Want to get out this case asap, the closed off corner my comp was in is now opened up so thats 1 heat problem out the way) cause I don't think I need the PSU now but I think it would be best to get 1 soon cause this Cooler Master 1 was the cheapest non crap company (Hyena just seems a bit dodgy, mickster has 1 of their psu's and its been running for ages but he has tons of hdd troubles, don't know if psu is involved but its the only weak point of his rig)

"One dimm per channel" means "one stick per channel" -- you basically can't run 4 sticks and have it dual-channel, just two sticks.

My friend mentioned it might be better to get an Nvidia chipset instead of an AMD since I don't use ATi so since this is the only Gigabyte mobo with an Nvidia chipset thats sold here was wonding if the GA-M750SLI-DS4 was an Ok board (Cause it not only is the only Gigabyte Nvidia chipset board sold here, it also only has 1 store that sells it, could go Asus but not really that interested in them atm), Thanks.

EDIT: Just gonna get Asus M3N78-VM, thanks for the help.

Since the OP's question seems to be answered, I'm just gonna try to hijack this thread Very Happy
So I'm thinking of upgrading my CPU, right now I have a Athlon 64 X2 4200+
Now, what I'd like to know would it be better to get, say, an Opteron (since I only have an AM2 board and don't wanna upgrade that too)
or to get a Phenom X4 (which apparently fits onto the AM2 too) or would the loss of speed, cpu power or whatever be too great to justify getting it?
I'm probably gonna upgrade to an AM2+ eventually but can't say if it's even gonna be this year.
So how bad do the Phenom quad core cpus run on an AM2 board?
Any advice on which cpu to get would be appreciated

and while I'm on it, any advice on a new graphics card? right now I'm running a Radeon x1950 and I kinda lost track on pc components Smile

Well, to start off with Opteron is a server CPU, as for gfx I have an 8800GT that still works great and since its old (Only a yr) should be cheap, but also harder to find, for a good CPU I guess if you don't want to up your motherboard maybe a 6000+ they are pretty cheap now aswell then you can upgrade motherboard and CPU later when you got more cash?

Yes the Opteron does exist as a Server CPU but then it's a Socket F but they also make them for the Socket AM2 Wink
But if I go for a 6000+ should I look for a Windsor or a Brisbane? Does somebody care to elaborate the differences?
And is quad core the way to go? Would it make sense to get, say, a Phenom X4 9950 and put it on a AM2 board and upgrade it later?
Seeing as the Phenom costs almost thrice the amount the Athlon 64 x2 6000+
When I go ahead and upgrade my CPU I don't wanna have to think about upgrading it again for a while, would a 600ß+ still free me of that or would I have to upgrade again "soon"?
Every time I buy a new pc or upgrade my system I am at a dead loss...

"Windsor"

Frequency: 3000 MHz
L2-Cache: 2 x 1024 KiB
CPU Multiplier: 15x
Voltage: 1.30/1.35 V

"Brisbane"

Frequency: 3100 MHz
L2-Cache: 2 x 512 KiB
CPU Multiplier: 15.5x
Voltage: 1.1V-1.40V

Thats all the differences I could find, give you some insight and help you make the decision without knowing the full extent (All of this is from Wikipedia). I can't really say which is really all that better as I don't really know what all of it means (L2-Cache, Brisbane being the later released but it has a smaller L2, I'm more fuzzy on that as opposed to completely unknowledgeable and CPU Multiplier, not 100% what it does but can take a guess, will have to read it up on Wiki sometime, it is your friend). Hope it helped.

As for the Phenom they recommended to me to wait for Phenom II (Triple core I cause its cheaper I guess) which I think I read comes out sometime soon (It's already listed for sale in NZ and if NZ has it everyone else should), as for working on an AM2 board I think it will but as you said not to the full extent (I know for a fact DDR2 1066 won't work etc Razz).

Further information from Gigabyte's Website:

*Note: If you install AMD AM2+ CPU on AM2 motherbord, the system bus speed will downgrade from HT3.0(5200MHz) to HT1.0(2000 MT/s) spec; however, the frequency of AM2+ CPU will not be impacted. Please refer "CPU Support List" for more information.

Sorry for double posting but I have the HAF 923 with me now, looks great, can't wait to get all the parts in it but gonna wait for a new motherboard, but another thing I've been considering is a new PSU as well, and not just a quicky like the Cooler Master I have (Check OP) so I was wondering if any of these brands are to avoid when it comes to PSU's:

Antec (Heard they were OK in the past)
Cooler Master (My current Cooler Master has really awkward plugs, really tough to take off, not really liking them at all ATM)
Corsair
OCZ
Zalman (Maybe its just me but their products just seem a bit overpriced...)
(Any other brands, OK, but those are the main ones available to me so they might not be of much help, already know of Tagan Razz)

Antec wouldn't mind but not sure of and Corsair, not sure of their PSUs, 1 of the reasons for a PSU change is the fact that I'm pretty sure its the thing that keeps overheating, my CPU has overheated in the past but I got a huge fan to stop that, I've never really had a RAM problem and I turn my GPU's fan up to 50% while gaming (Only recently, its overheated before that, just quicker now), and when it overheats and shuts down the case fans turn on and off and the lights flicker asif the PSU has given up,
thanks in advance for the advice, dunno what I would do without you all.

zalman / Corsair are very good from personal experience

Currently got an OCZ game Xtreme 700w, cant complain about stability , but the fan is not quiet at all, i went as far as voiding my warrenty to put in a zalman 12cm fan in it to replace the original fan, so worth it.

Cool, thanks, was wondering about OCZ, was leaning towards them but think I'll stick with Corsair like my original plan (link in OP).

Put everything in the new case on the new motherboard, but 1 thing I didn't expect was that the extra SATA ports that are black don't seem to work (I'm assuming they do, just not with a single SATA hard drive as I think Mickster had a similar problem), so was wondering if theres something I'm missing, I put the hdd in my external (has 2 bays) for now but would like to get it in (so I can use the other port aswell) and couldn't find anything in BIOS (that looked asif it would help atleast).
