I can't really tell what it is that seperates these movies from other war movies, but I enjoyed watching em very much.
So now I'm wondering if anyone knows any movies that are similar to these so I can go grab em :-)
Maybe there are none, I dunno, but I thought I should give it a try!

What sets these out from the other war movies? Both are sub-par to the great ones, imo.

that is a single movie actually, and one of the most personal, well-shot and emotive anti-war movies ever.

"Die Brücke (1959) (The Bridge)" is a very good film considering when it was shot. Not sure if you can get hold of it, if you do, it might be hard to get subs for it though, but give it a go.
Quote: | A group of German boys is ordered to protect a small bridge in their home village during the waning months of the second world war. Truckloads of defeated, cynical Wehrmacht soldiers flee the approaching American troops, but the boys, full of enthusiasm for the "blood and honor" Nazi ideology, stay to defend the useless bridge. |
IMBD LINK
I actually think this might have been one of the first "anti" war movies shot in Germany after WWII.
A remake was broadcasted (TV)...I think 2008. It keeps the concept of the 1959 film, but shot in a more modern way of course. Maybe try to get this one!.
DIE BRÜCKE (2008)
EDIT: If you have access to Usenet there are several versions of it there. And there are subs on the net, so no excuse .
Another classic (old school) is "Catch 22"
Quote: | A bombardier in World War II tries desperately to escape the insanity of the war. However, sometimes insanity is the only sane way cope with a crazy situation. Catch-22 is a parody of a "military mentality" and of a bureaucratic society in general. |
Actually stars "Orson Wells" .
Based on the brilliant novel from "Joseph Heller"
IMBD LINK
And continuing with real classics here
"Paths of Glory (1957)" by Stanley Kubrick
Quote: | The futility and irony of the war in the trenches in WWI is shown as a unit commander in the French army must deal with the mutiny of his men and a glory-seeking general after part of his force falls back under fire in an impossible attack. |
All of the above are old films, but they are true classics!...believe me;).

As a Russian I can really recommend 9 rota, probably one of the most expensive Russian war movies (though not the best), don't look for truth in it but just enjoy the action.
But a truly great movie is Prisoner of the Caucus (Kavkazkii Plennik) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116754/, its really an anti-war movie, not a lot of action but a lot of character study.
If you want all action, not a lot of words get Voina (War) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0309047/, pretty brutal movie, with a lot of shooting, and both movies (Voina and Plennik) have Bodrov jr. in them (Brat, Brat 2, Sestry), one of the better Russian actors IMO.
So if you can find them with English subs I really recommend them.
Sig too big. -Nothing is too big for Fedor. Expect a nasty armbar.

good stuff, thanks guys.
btw CC, I don't need subs for Die Brücke as I'm austrian. Must be a sign! :P
oh and zipfero, I didn't mean that they're better movies than other war movies. I simply liked their style. Like... both movies I mentioned are about single, relatively large scale battles and follow several different soldiers involved in those battles, including the commander of the troops (Black Hawk Down has less of that, but it's there)
