My parents always told me, "You'll be old before you know".
Well, while 39 isn't old (although when i was a teenager or in my 20's. . . 39 seemed pretty damned old), I am starting to realize that getting old sucks worse than i thought it would.

Death isn't much of an issue for me. . . but I really wasn't prepared for this getting old business.
Seeing your loved ones getting older, sicker, and dying... just sucks. Not to mention the other things that come. . . like losing interest in stuff and getting bored with things that used to really excite you.
Prime example? For me, it is video games. Man i started playing video games back when Pong was out. I was young. But i remember it.
Everything I play these days has such a "been there done that" feeling to it. Nothing keeps my interest for long. I cant remember the last game I actually beat before I got bored of it. But i keep buying the stuff. I still WANT to love them. It's sad when i find myself playing stuff like Peggle more than anything else. lol.

And the older I get... the faster time seems to fly by. Seriously. It's like someone pushed me down a hill and the closer I get to the bottom the faster i go.

I find myself being one of those guys that keeps thinking back to when he used to do this and that (like wrestling in the national championships) and wondering where all the time went (along with my abs lol).

Ah well. just felt like venting on that a bit. Enjoy each moment while you're able and don't take it for granted all you younger guys out there.

I really understand. Gonna be 39 later this year. What have I done. Got all of the old systems and the ones I didn't have. I can play these games for 15 minutes and be done and back to life wife and kids. If I get into GTA4 2 hours are gone before I know it. Now I feeal like a old fuck cause I got Atari 2600 5200 7800, Intelivision, Colecovision and all of the othe consoles. I play them more than any of the PC games. Not to mention my older brothers are the average Americans with heart problems and are ready to die. Then theres the gray hair. "What a drag it is getting old"

Well, I can't really relate to the games getting old ( so many I have never played) but I understand where you are coming from Big_Gun. Ya, things can move alot faster with age. Going to be turning 36 this year.

Actually you're right on the money there. As our perspective change, relative experience of time changes with it and the years just keeps flying by faster and faster. During summer breaks when I was a kid the summer seemed like an eternity. Now they come and go in what feels like a few weeks. And turning 36 felt like the most pointless thing yet. I'm halfway to 72 dammit. :S

Obviously you need to buy a motorbike (a HD, not any of that japanese/euro crap) and let off some steam. Isn't that the #1 answer to the midlife crisis? Or alternatively, a fast sports car. Very Happy

Or move to a place where there's a lot of old people? (There's apparently a place in Florida where retired people move).

Exactly, then you'll feel very young even when you're 55. Wink

Yeah I don't really play games much anymore which is why I post a lot less on here. Completely lost interest and I don't see it ever coming back. Usually when a game comes out now I play it for maybe 10 minutes and lose interest. Sorta glad though because I have other priorities.

If I were in your shoes I'd ensure that everyday is spent being productive (Relative to your definition of it) and hitting the Gym! Can't neglect your body as you age, makes me sad to see older people limited by physical ability.

Well i turn 39 this summer, things that happened 20 odd years ago still seem so fresh in my mind. from being 27 time collected speed like a huge fucking nasty snowball and BAM here i am at 30 fooking 9 Laughing

You failed to mention the aches and pains that you get with getting older Big_Gun!! maybe it was the 3 years of intense bodybuilding i did in my late 20's but the failing body parts is the worse part of getting older i think.

But i still love playing games, and i get just as much if not more enjoyment from them now, i still feel like i was in my 20's tbh and having just had my first child times are good Wink

On a lighter note, Company Of Heroes is probably my favorite game that "kept me playing" within the last 3-4 or so years

That, coming from someone who posted random pictures from the net to show how much muscle he had put on, just provided me with my daily dosage of iron(y).

I think the more repetitive activities you do, the faster time goes by. Whereas the more variety you provide yourself with in life - the more slowly time seems to move.

If you are a very habitual person, and do the same things day after day after day, every day is basically the same... so the repetition makes it so you can't distinguish one day after another. And basically you're standing on the same spot doing the same shit over and over.

Breaking out of habits and daring to do things is really a must when the years start ticking.

I'm just 23 and I already see myself losing interest in the simple things. I really miss the excitement I had as a kid, now everything seems so "meh". About time going faster, I think it's because you get stuck in a rythm once you get mature. School, job, home etc. Go to vacation for example and your perception of time will slow dramatically, if that vacation is filled with fun of course. This last three years school has pretty much taken over all of my time, I don't even remember what the hell happened in those three years. It seems like a month looking back to it.

Actually, time does seem to pass faster the older you get. It's a phenomenon of our brain and how we experience time. As we grow older we amass more memories and our perspective becomes more elongated. A year is almost a lifetime when you're 10, but when you're 35 the experience is very different, because your perspective has changed. You no longer have only 9 years to compare with, you now have 34 years. (This probably doesn't make any sense since I can't put it down in a really descriptive way)

It's a bitch to explain for someone who hasn't experienced it himself, and this change in experience won't become apparent until the 30'ies at which point time will seem to flow faster and faster. It's not only a result of being stuck in a rut or having a repetitive life (although it is a major contributor), the experience of time simply changes the older you get because of the perspective changing with time.

Found a plausible explanation:

Quote:
Our earliest memories go back to the age of 2, maybe 1.5 years, right? Lets say we were 2 years old when we started our "conscious life experience" clock.

Since 6yrs - 2yrs = 4 yrs of memorable awareness, it could be argued all of us at the age of six, that the time span of 4 years is equal to a "Lifetime". Do you follow?

The year I was six, spring lasted forever and summer vacation went on and on. Halloween would never get here, and "How many days 'till Santa comes?!". The chronological distortions we suffered were not due to impatience; they were truly long periods of time to endure. The year I was 6 (don't forget, 4 years = a Lifetime) represents 1 quarter of my whole life! That is 25%!

So 25% of a six year old's "Lifetime" time, is represented by 1 year.

Now I'm 42. It is already the end of October! This year is flying by so fast! But my chronological measuring stick is longer. 25% of everything I know about a "Lifetime" is spread over 10 years! I perceive 1 year as a 6 year old perceives 5 weeks.

If there were a magic potion that kept me alive for 10000 years, I might perceive the last 10 years between my 9990th and 10000th birthday to whiz by as fast as a 15 minute coffee break seems to today.

Short: the older we get, the longer the measuring stick becomes and thus each individual mark on the stick becomes smaller in comparison to the whole.

Well. . . the avatar was me. I don't look like that now. But i did at one point back in my wrestling days. I would post my facebook/myspace pages. . . but i wouldn't want most fuck nuts (like you) on here knowing too much about me.
If that makes me fail at life in your book. . . what a sad little life of little accomplishment you must have. I will admit the level of stupidity of me constantly looking back though.
Edit: avatar changed because it is stupid.

I have given that some serious thought. I had my mind on a 2008/2009 cyber grey Corvette Z06 for quite a while now.
And I have always wanted a Harley but I too scared of other drivers on the road.

You may be onto something there. I definitely have gotten myself into a really ordinary daily routine when my life has been anything but that prior to the last 5 years.
Guess that comes with wife and kids. I want to do stuff like take Jiu Jitsu and some other activities but i just can't seem to find the time these days.

Obviously just my opinion, but if you want one and your situation permits it, go for it as soon as you can. Of course motorbikes aren't as safe as a car, but for a responsible and alert rider they're no death traps either. I know a certain person who got a HD only when he was near 60 (and had wanted one since his teens), and he only wishes he would've started sooner.

I try and stay active as much as I can. I coach youth wrestling and have a gym in my home with a power cage and Sole treadmill. But i have neglected my workouts for about the last 6 months.
