Quote: | Bethesda will unveil its heavily rumoured Elder Scrolls MMO in May, according to a new report.
Elder Scrolls Online, as it is apparently known, is set a millennium prior to the events of Skyrim, an "industry source" told Tom's Guide.
It is speculated that this means the unannounced game is set during the Second Era of Elder Scrolls lore, hundreds of years before any game in the fantasy role-playing series. It will, apparently, feature three playable factions, each represented by an animal: lion, dragon and bird of prey (either a phoenix or an eagle).
The Elder Scrolls MMO is then expected to be shown at the E3 expo in June, and again in more detail at Quakecon, alongside Doom 4.
It is in production at ZeniMax Online Studios, which has been after staff with MMO knowledge for some time now.
Indeed, rumblings of an Elder Scrolls MMO have been felt since 2007, when Bethesda registered the website address elderscrollsonline.com. Then, Bethesda marketing chap Pete Hines said the company was only snapping up URLs to prevent others from getting there first.
Then, in 2010, legal papers submitted in the now settled court case between Bethesda and Interplay revealed the company was working on a "World of Warcraft type MMO".
Apparently development on the MMO had been ongoing since 2006 and involved "close to a hundred people" and a budget of "tens of millions of dollars".
In 2007, Bethesda's parent company ZeniMax hired Mythic Entertainment co-founder Matt Firor to lead development of an MMO. His experience on Dark Ages of Camelot, a traditional fantasy game, closely fits the Elder Scrolls bill. |

As long as they continue the main series as single palyer only, it doesn't really matter.

How many MMORPGs can even be forced down the markets throats?
Anyway i think a 3 faction MMO is what a lot of people have been screaming for all these years since DAOC.

less than 5 at once if you count up all the AAA ones that didn't start out free to pay and still have a lot of users.

I don't do MMOs, but some competition for Blizzard wouldn't hurt.

Yeah, I recall Todd Howard said in DICE keynote that Zenimax Online is working on yet unannounced title, so this could be it. If it's separated from Bethesda Game Studio I wouldn't worry, as long as Bethesda keeps making singleplayer games.

I can't see how this won't be generic MMO garbage with an elder scrolls theme attached to it.
They have no choice, if they want to charge $20 a month it has to follow the same formula.

How do you make an MMO that isn't generic?

Report what?
Suggest ideas for innovations. It's easy to suggest, but hard to find any areas to innovate these days, especially in a market as saturated as the MMO.

i'm just saying, it's an obvious answer, if you don't want to make something generic, you must innovate in order to do so, i didn't mean to say that i have any real ideas how one might innovate.
i wish i did have ideas how to innovate in MMO's, but.... the muse is a fickle thing, comes and goes as it pleases.
and..... i'm not gonna touch the second one, it should make sense after reading the above anyway.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/05/03/elder-scrolls-online-announced-an-mmo-set-in-the-world-of-skyrim/
Quote: | Elder Scrolls Online has just been announced, to the pretend shock of people who definitely didn’t already know that was happening. It’s being made by Zenimax Online Studios, the studio founded by Bethesda’s parent company to develop massively multiplayer games. There have been a lot of rumours that Elder Scrolls Online was going to be their first game, but this is the first time we’ve heard anything concrete.
This will also be the first time the Elder Scrolls universe has been the setting for anything other than a singleplayer game. We know very little about it so far. Will there be long queues to enter instanced oblivion gates? Will the crafting system rely on every player stuffing hundreds of lettuces and calipers in their pockets? Game Informer are trickling out the details in the coming days and weeks, and we’re bound to find out much more in the run up to E3.
Given how many hours Skyrim was played for on Steam during its launch month, it seems like Elder Scrolls Online stands a good chance of destroying all of our lives. If you’re one of the many who aren’t yet done venturing through Skyrim though, try out our best Skyrim mods story.
Are you excited at the chance to play a Skyrim-style game with your friends, or would you rather venture through Bethesda’s worlds on your own? |
