Sorry in advance, I'm sure this is all captured here somewhere but I just moved and dont have net access and mobile is maxed out for the month so I cant really research on my own. Basically my HTPC is fucked and I need a bluray player + wireless network streaming media player to replace it. A PS3 is $220 which seems like the cheapest replacement option. But I have questions:

A) does streaming over wireless g work fine for mkvs over ps3 media server or whatever it's called... Converting is not an option and it should play from my win7 box upstairs, even buffering is ok as long as it plays it
B) if I buy one of the newest slim versions can I play games off of a USB hd or something?

Thx

A) Well i stream 1080p content to my PS3 and it works well most of the time. But my PS3 is sitting 2 meters away from my router, so it's fast enough. I use PS3 media server and you have a lot of options to set the quality of picture and sound to get the perfect fit. I guess you will get some stuttering at 1080p if your ps3 is sitting far away from your wireless point. 720p should work perfectly all the time tho. It also streams all kinds of file formats, music, pictures...

B) I think the new slims come with a newer firmware version than 3.55. So you are out of luck there, because there is no way of putting CFW on the newer versions. If you find a used 3.55 tho, you can play all the backlog of games. Newer games require a new firmware tho. The PS3 scene is pretty morbid right now.

1/

Never tried it wirelessly only with a wire, but PS3 Media server http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/ worked pretty well

you can push Y and choose copy and it will copy it to the internal drive, so you could set it up and then copy it to the internal if it wont stream.

I presume you could use mkv2vob and put the mpg films on an external drive and just play them that way too.

To be honest I found the PS3 to be a so / so media player, so I just bought an apple TV 2 for 99 quid and slapped XBMC on it.

2/ As long as its 3.55 F/W or below then yes.

In my experience the ps3 doesn't cut it as a fully functioning media player. Too many files won't play or you had to convert them. Fast Forward / Rewind was always a problem over a network especially wifi. Id seriously look at an alternative. I got a REVO 3610 off ebay for about 150 quid and stuck XBMC on. Works perfectly

agreed... stay away from the ps3 for media center purposes. buy something to use with xbmc.

ok, no games might be a bit of a deal breaker and wifi performance (without conversion) is a must have.

Looks like it will be an apple tv 2 + xbmc and a cheapo standalone BR player then Smile

question, can you a USB thumb drive or external HD with apple tv?

Getting a slim doesn't immediately discount it being on 3.55 ... some Slims even came shipped with 3.21/3.40/3.41. You might get lucky Razz
