http://trainhorns.net/sound/

I can of course hear it because im just 20 and I don't listen to music loud 24/7 and not that often at rock concerts.

Seems like most people under 27-30 can hear the sound. (Even tho it says over 25 on the site). Dunno if it just fades away the older you get or if you suddenly can't hear it tho.
They use this sound to keep teenagers away from some places or something, but sucks to be old and still hear it Very Happy earplugs FTW I guess Razz

So any of you guys in your 30s++ that hear the sound Razz ?

Yes, I can hear it. An incredibly high pitched sound, quite tiring/annoying.

It's sort of strange since I haven't been kind to my ears (years in rehearsals without protection, plenty of high volume metal concerts etc.), and I'm 36 as well.

In the norwegian article that linked to this site a 30yo could hear it without any problems. So I guess it has to do with genes and how well you protect your hears (sound wise Razz )

Yes I can hear it, but it's VERY similar to a sound thats ringing in my ears when it's dead quiet.. like when im trying to sleep, i can hear that high pitched sound.. But ive had it so long now that i don't think about it..

But if i concentrate and "listen" to it, it gives me a headache Sad
I have no idea what and why though Surprised

I'm 20....

*edit*
Turned up the volume.
Now I can hear it. Not much, but a tiny silent noise.

I hate you.

Lol! There's very few benefits to growing old and you just missed out on one of them. Very Happy

Can't hear anything at normal/loud volume. Only at full I can hear something which I wouldn't call noise but it's not totally silent either.

I wonder what causes that high pitched buzz when in silence... Is it mental? Laughing

Very high pitched and annoying, it would probably deter me from entering an area if that was constantly blaring out. I'm only 23 though and fairly gentle on my ears so I expected to be able to hear it.

Mmm, been on ... a few concerts in my lifetime. Best ones with Meshuggah (without the earplugs). So I dunno if this is a proper hearing test. Razz

man I could hear it, as soon as I turned it on I heard the high pitched voice, it was extremely loud and painful (I had the speaker volume on ~medium)
I started to feel a heat in my head, couldnt bare it turned it off after 3 sec. even when I set the soundsystem on mute I can still hear this shit. it then sounds like this high noise a TV thats turned on makes, only more intense.
Using a teufel concept E magnum 5.1 system btw.

At how much Hz is this sound? I expected it to be very quiet but it was very loud.

To the guys who weren't able to hear the sound: Maybe it's just your speakers that weren't capable of producing the sound Wink Very Happy

WOW ! SiN, Leo your ears are singing in the silence too Very Happy I have it for about a year, sometime I hear it, sometimes I don't. Actually I planned to see a doctor this summer about it. Also I checked some medical forums and there are similar cases.

It could be
- Ears hyper-sensitivity, in that case the sound is the sound of blood moving in vessels, capillary etc.
- Ears infection, but in that case they should hurt a lot
- "Swan song" of the nerves ala as soon as the sound would be gone one would stop hearing at that frequency

On topic: Yes I can hear the sound, it is of higher frequency than the sound my ears sing me at silent places Smile

Try testing the range of your hearing with this:

http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=20680

I could hear it up to 18,000Hz then it just sounds like a click. Be careful as it can get a bit painful at the higher frequencies if your volume is loud.

Tried on MacBook Pro only so far

Via Speakers - I can hear from 100 Hz to 16 KHz
Via headphones - At 50% volume I can hear up to and including 18 KHz. I can hear the rest of the range at 80% volume, also 19 KHz - for this one I had to focus a bit. Also, 19KHz sound is almost identical to the one my ears sing me Laughing

I've done a couple of searches and apparently that sound in the OP is actually only 15,000HZ, so the majority of people should be able to hear it, old or not.

Well you can hear in the range of 20Hz-20000Hz.

I remember watching Walter Lewins teaching where he has this frequency generator and he tests his students how good they can hear. I couldn't hear on 18kHz, and he went up to 24kHz, and then when he saw that some students are still holding their hands up high, he told them that he turned off the machine @ 21kHz, so some of them must have super hearing Laughing

We did the same test on class in general physics last semester and I stopped hearing the sound @ 18kHz.

It doesn't have to be that. You can get temp tinnitus after a concert. And iv sometimes heard it when its dead silent. But I always sleep with my laptop on with 3x external disks. So I never hear it Very Happy

I really doubt Sin has tinnitus.

If you hear the high pitched sounds after a concert/disco than say goodbye to this frequency, because you'll never hear it again. It's the last signals going to your brain, while the according receptors are dying.

OK did the test on my notebook with headset. I could hear every sound up to 22 kHz. But I think that the onboard soundcard isn't capable of producing sounds > 19 kHz, because they sounded pretty wierd Smile So I have yet to do a better test.

I miss my PC 3, just start basic and type
sound 20000,1 to have a 20kHz sound Smile

I seriously doubt you could hear 22KHz properly, but with this kind of test I suppose there will always be people who say they can. Dingo_d's post gives an example of that. Rolling Eyes
