So Mike Ryan from Cloudfrag got in touch to tell us about his service, which is coming soon. His plan is to provide gamers with dedicated servers, but only for the time they want to play on them. “Instead of paying a set monthly fee you only pay for the number of hours you are actually using the server,” explains Ryan. “I think this will save a lot of players a lot of money, and make dedicated servers accessible to people who do not want to pay a monthly fee.” Yep, he’s planning to charge for a dedicated service by the hour, which should work out a lot cheaper than a 24/7 server if you’re just playing a few hours a week with chums. There’s a beta for the service coming up soon, and there’s a sign-up email on the site for interested parties. Possibly worth a look.

just let me be clear - i may be understanding this wrong.

is he talking about server charges if YOU want to set up your own server? in which case, thats fine, i misunderstood the post.. it just made it sound like a fee to play ON servers that you dont run.

Naw, it's basically "pay as you go" for server operators. Rather than paying for an entire month, you only get charged for the times when players are actually using it -- it's not a charge the player has to pay.

This is metered billing in a pretty looking dress, but it's still metered billing.

Besides, I'm having a hard enough time imagining the kind of situation that would make me want this kind of service. Either I'm highly active in a game and want to host a server for my clan or whatnot all the time, or I'm not all that active and just play on someone else's server. If I'm interested enough in a game to actually rent a server, chances are I'm going to play that game enough that metered billing couldn't possibly be a good deal for me.

I got the feeling that this can either be much cheaper than monthly payment or alot more expensive.

Depends on if the charge per hour is agnostic or not. If it is (same price per hour), then it'll be cheaper for peak hours and more expensive for off-peak, relatively speaking, given that the price is similar to the average used hour for monthly charges. In that case, players of both hours benefit, but then they have a server load imbalance issue, so they'd have to charge more to compensate for needing greater capacity to meet peak demand that goes unused during off-peak hours.

This is actually pretty similar to how power usage is handled in the US (where I live), as depending on geographic location you sell or buy power during certain times of the year. In other words, they'll likely use these servers for more than hosting games, so they can use the full load during off-peak hours, which should make it cheaper than monthly. If my analogy holds then they will likely have a contractor for this, in which case this could be quite affordable. Also reminds me of laser tag in that regard. Very Happy
