Paradox has announced that Crusader Kings 3 will come out for PC in 2020, and will also be included on Xbox Game Pass for PC.
The biggest, most noticeable change is that the small 2D character portraits from CK2 have been replaced with full 3D, animated models.
Other features include, from the press release:
- Shape Your Dynasty: Guide unique characters through history, choosing lifestyles best suited to their personalities and your ambitions.
- Rewrite Medieval History: Dynasties will change and adapt to changes in family and politics, and religious beliefs are more firmly under your control.
- Build a Mighty Kingdom: Use your vassals’ fear of you as a weapon or call on familial obligations to persuade reluctant relatives to submit.
- Experience High Drama: Stranger than fiction stories leap off the screen, as characters plot against you and events push you to extremes.
- Learn as You Go: Guided advice to help newcomers navigate a rich medieval world. In-game suggestions tip you off to paths you might not have considered.
- The Usual Crusader Kings Fun: Keep a stubborn council in line, scheme against your overbearing uncle or marry the rich duchy...oops, I mean pious duke or duchess of your dreams.
Haha indeed as per ParaGreed tradition, hopefully it will still be easily creamapiable
This is such a shame though. I stopped buying their games for this cause I end up playing a pirated version in the end anyway. Paradox DLC is overpriced, but they do keep the game fresh.
I understand that the long support of their games requires some money.
A 5$ year pass would be fine, a year of paradox dlc isn't worth anything more.
In the years since CK2’s release, “Deus Vult” – an eleventh century crusader battlecry – has become a vile meme beloved of racists on the internet. I asked how Paradox’s community team felt about this, and was told emphatically that the words will not appear in Crusader Kings 3. That’s refreshing, but in a game set during a time of conflicts fetishised by modern fascists, it’s the tip of the iceberg. I’ll be writing more about how Paradox are handling the political sensitivities of making a game about the crusades, and how they’re handling the representation of non-European cultures, in the weeks to come.
For CK3 to be good they have to include everything that's available in CK2 with all the major dlcs in 1.0. They won't do it though, so circa 2023, after 5 or 6 major dlc packages, the game will be on par with the current CK2 experience.
Also, lol at PDX omitting the Deus Vult phrase from the game in an effort to pander to modern loudmouths. Should we expect a transgender Charlemagne in this one?
Edit: Just saw that the republic and nomad mechanics from CK2 are confirmed not to be implemented on release.
They've corrected it. And it seems that a good chunk of 2's DLC systems will be in there day 1.
It would be suicidal if they launched without a good number of the new mechanics introduced in 2's DLCs. It would just be another Imperator where only blind fanboys would defend it.
get it for free in 2023
dafuck is it with retards launching new games with only a stupid cgi trailer that shows nothing about the game ... paradox wankers
oh, and politicaly correct crusades ? really ? REALLY ? DISTORTING THE GRIMM CRUEL REALITY THAT IS HISTORY U SJW WANKERS

They're backpedalling after an enormous shitstorm on their forums, but I'm not sure how sincere they are. They also said they'll bring back some of the dlc mechanics from CKII, but axe unneeded ones. One of the devs said the whole game is strcutured from the start to accomodate future dlcs more easily and they'll focus on more smaller dlcs rather than large expansion like they did for CK2 and EU4. The main guy even stated how the game will be complicated, but refined for new audiences.
My bet is the new simplistic interface and "refined" gameplay are targeting the console audience and the game might receive a port. I guess the old loyal fanbase might not be enough to sustain them.
I don't really read it as backpedaling. I'm more likely to believe it was just the RPS writer with his leading questions stirring up drama, because Deus Vult is only really said once in CK2 I think such that if they did take it out and the journalist didn't bring it up, I doubt anyone would have noticed or cared.
And if they took it out, they'd have to take out Allahu Akbar. Besides, Deus Vult is probably one of the least offensive things in CK2 if you want to get offended.
I think they mentioned it in passing and the journo just ran with it, but it's not the first time for them to be influenced by their modern political views. When they were reworking stuff in CK2, originally they planned to put in the gender equality law as default in the game. Only after some backlash they made it optional and later as a rule option at new game's start.
Plus this overblown non-issue riled some fans up and they opened some old PDX wounds.
You hate the UI? But have you played CK2? UI there is absolutely worse!
I love CK2 UI, but I hate the new one. The CK3 UI reminds me of a mobile game. I hate the 3d portraits, too. Otherwise the game seems to be progressing nicely and there will be a ton of features included. The trade nerf is a big disappointment though.
I would really like this to be turn based but oh well. I'm liking the stress system they have since it'll give me a reason not to always pick the optimal choice and actually roleplay because I am weak.
The game actually is somewhat turn based, as every in-game day is one turn, if you're patient enough
I love turn based games, but in this game it just wouldn't work. I'm the kind of gamer who plays these games very slow (real-time, or perhaps 1 notch fast forward). I've never reached 100 in-game years in CKII. Turn based would slow things down even more.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.
I don't know if there is enough going on with this game to justify a sequal, it just looks like ck2.
3d characters, some quality of life improvements, some new mechanics. That's about it.
They could also just improve ck2 graphics and continue expanding that game (or that's what they have done )
It almost seems there running out of ideas.
