Well it was quite a power symbol for the old faith really, as was using it in various imaginative ways and well, losing it in various other ways for a number of different reasons as well.
Then again that goes way back to the ancient era really and just about the start of human history and faith.

EDIT: As for how we turned that into some song and dance number for children during midsummer festivities well...Sweden turned to Christianity during year 1000 or so, took some time since the Vikings kinda found other uses for the various pilgrims and monks spreading the new faith (Decor for example.) but the power of beer endures too and probably won over the more stubborn elders in the end. (That and something about eternal forgiveness somehow in exchange for a healthy sum of money however that was realistically assumed to work. God Father indeed.)
