|
 |
little prologue: had my box since the launch in 2005, never had any problems, but just as the 3 years of warranty had passed, the RROD showed up. surprisingly, half an hour later and without doing anything, it worked again - for months, without a hitch. last week, it RRODed again-->towel fix, worked. today it crashed on the dashboard-->restart-->RROD-->towel fix-->works again.
that bitch obviously can't be killed, but now it freezes a few minutes after i turn it on. and it even does it with variations!
ninja blade-->picture freezes
halo wars-->black screen
dashboard-->bright green screen (with a light checker pattern)
burnout revenge (original)-->brown screen (also same checker pattern)
but no RROD since then whatsoever!
now it's obvious that it's dying and i know that the towel fix is only temporary and damages the console, but maybe i can prolong its life once more.
first off, would the xclamp fix help in any way in this case?
i've already cleaned the cache of the hdd and there's no dust blocking airflow. stood it up, lied it down, removed the hdd, checked the cables, neither the psu nor the console itself get hot, even placed it near the open window (and it's fuckin cold outside).
gonna open it up tomorrow and check the heatsinks + replace the thermal compound cause it all points right at overheating imo, but is there anything else i could try?
all help is greatly appreciated!

if it wasn't for the warranty, i'd x-clamp it asap. it all comes down to chips losing contact due to bending in the motherboard when it heats up, so maybe you've got quite an extreme case there. you sure doesn't come from the fans? (maybe bad ball bearings which leeds to grinding when they speed up)

I probably described it wrong. It sounds kinda like if there's extreme and fast temperature change in a room and many plastic things (TV, PC case, etc) start making popping sound. For example if I open a window and there's -10C outside. I dunno if you heard that sound but that's the sound my xbox makes for a few minutes after turning it on and for a few minutes after turning it off.
But fuck it, as long as it works I don't care.

well in this case i hope they just fucked up sopmething with the metal cage, but if it's the heatsink(s), it's probably going on a rrod trip to MS soon.
