same problem here, with my other pc same vista same updates it works all the time, on my pc it works at first then after a while it does same thing that is does for u
now i have to turn off pc all the time, otherwise the only thing to wake it up from that stage is to cold reset

first i thought it's nvidia drivers, but on my other pc with different card same drivers sleep works all the time 100%

googled a lot, still haven't found wtf is the problem

I could never get standby to work correctly in XP for years. Tried on Dells and custom builts. Either it would not go into standby, or would not come out of standby.

A couple of things you should check:
1. If your PC has a Asus Motherboard ( or maybe a different brand) , make sure the USB jumpers are connected to the +5VSB pins ( if i recall correctly). This was extremely difficult to figure out with my Asus board.
2. Make sure your bios standby mode is set to S3 and not S1
3. Vista SP1 improves sleep compatibility

hm? I thought the PC is supposed to stay on with just the HDD shutting down and stuff when going standby.

Are you confusing standby with hibernation or am I confusing something?

Hibernate saves your PC memory to disk and shutsdown everything. Standby only shutsdown major hardware but leaves the PC in a low power mode that can be resumed instantly. With hibernation when you start the PC it goes all the way from POST to Windows loading and then windows just restores the previous state. Standby is like the PC has never been turned off.

Its a question of taste, personaly I like to standby the PC to save energy when I'm not doing nothing, but really like to just touch my keyboard and everything is just like when I left. It's also a nice thing to have in mediacenters, you can just "turn on" the pc to listen to some mp3/watch some movies without having to wait for the system to POST, boot, etc, etc....

well i'll be damned, after fiddling with bios and switching from ide to ahci sleep works all the time

altho my hd still in udma 6 mode instead of 7 at least sleep mode works how it suppose to

btw if u disable that hibernation file which is about 4 gigs big [at least for me], it goes to sleep instantly unlike before

for me sleep is more like a convenience rather than energy saving feature, if i'm not using pc for several hours and not dLding anything why should it be on, recovering from sleep takes couple of sec's unlike windows boot

that's because hybrid sleep writes the hibernation file everytime you put your computer to sleep, in case of a power outage.

Hey Mortibus, I'm having the same trouble, fresh install of BIE's March release of Vista 64bit, monitor goes off computer stays on, slightest movement from the mouse and it comes back on so I have to be quick on clicking so was wondering if you could be a little more specific where that hibernation file is.

my sleep and hibernate worked ok on my laptop, when power and no power, open or closed etc. i had it all figured out. And all of a sudden it stopped working. I cant even select it from the start menu. There used to be a 'sleep' button, but not anymore.

I guessed some swap memory file was becoming too big or so. But it all looked ok. So i just decided, meh it is vista.

Well it isnt that bad as a linux sleep or hibernate... Laughing Takes 20min to go to sleep mode and when i boot again, i have hufe partitioning errors. CentOS5.2 sleep != working Wink

Awesome, will try it soon, thanks

EDIT: Mouse thing didn't work so was wondering what the USB method was, is it looking at how its plugged in (e.g. top USB ports on the case)? (My knowledge ends at gfx cards and putting parts together Neutral )
