Not been one recently.
You could try Eve Online tho. It's an MMO but very much a sandbox as well. Moreso then Freelancer even.
Oh, almost forgot. There's X3 as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X3_Reunion
This genre is almost dead. Probably due to low sales which is a shame since Wing Commander style is one of my favorites. Another Homeworld or Wing Commander is something that tops my wishlist.
The only thing X3 and Freelancer have in common is space.
Though, if you decide to play X3, be sure to take the necessary 3 week economics course and be ready for some brutal stock market fights.
My advice is that you keep on playing Freelancer with one of the many superb mods that increase the lifespan of that awsome game.
Pirates of the Caribbean with the latest Build mod (now at v14 alpha 8.5 patch1)
It may not be recent - which not a problem if you're not a graphics whore;
and it may not be set in space - but it's got ships and pirates. What more could you possibly want.
Are there any recent games that are like Freelancer? Anything decent where you can build your own ship and be a pirate or whatever?
Sadly no. Freelancer was so fucking incredibly amazingly awesome. When it came out I played it nonstop for 24 hours. I don't know why people recommend you X3 or that EVE mmo shit, maybe they never played Freelancer.
I did actually, and didn't really like it. Esp the trading and freedom and such (and the fact that it's in space) is very much like both mentioned titles (imo at least )
As for the shooting other stuff part, Freespace 2 is far superior.
freespace 2 was fucking awesome... i dont think any game has literally made my jaw drop in the same way that game did... i remember the first time i was in a battle and all of a sudden a jump point opened up and the HUGEST fucking ship id ever seen came through... the size of the thing just blew my mind, it was one of the most amazing things id ever seen in a game.
and the final battle was freakin awesome as well. someone needs to make a serious space combat sim again... or even to a slightly lesser degree, another freelancer type game - freelancer was a game i really enjoyed for the sheer scope of it.. just a pity i felt the ending was incredibly abrupt, and it really left me with a 'wait... thats it?' feeling when i finished it...
While it's an extremely poor substitute for the GODLIKE Freelancer ... check out DarkStar One. Also the indie Evochron titles are staggeringly good, mate.
Got to love I-War2. A freaking jewel in mission design. I'll never forget the awesome mission when we had to sneak into an enemy system and use an awful lot of gameplay elements to get out fo there alive. A prime example why the majority of today's games are so pathetic. They only do a few things good and seem to forget to improve everything else. If you have a complex game-mechanic in place, the possibilities are endless, but if the game is simple, your choices are simple too.
Not to mention the great physics, it uses the Newtonian model and not the StarWars model.
Damn...now I got myself so excited that I have to install and play again.
jumpgate evolution comes out in june...it's like freelancer, just MP focused
Darkstar One was good, but I didn't like the ship transformation thing. When I first heard about the feature I imagined a fullscale editor which would enable me to design the ship as I see fit, but instead I got predetermend visual and performance upgrades. And it was a pain hunting those green blobs in every system, so I cheated.
My visions of building an awsome enterprise like ship were shattered.

Tried this very briefly before starting Sid Meier's Pirates! (yay ) again, can you say what kind of effect the realistic/arcade mode is supposed to have? I thought with the arcade mode on it'd be more like Pirates! is, but I couldn't really see any difference.
Guess I'll have to try it again after I'm done with Pirates!, the graphics certainly aren't anything special that's for sure(Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales did them better, but seems like at the cost of everything else).

Acrade/Realistic modes affect the speed of sea combat - like speed, how easy ships turn, cannon reload time and the rest of it (arcade is even up to 2x faster than realistic, i think?). Arcade mode makes battles go faster - while realistic is more for those armchair admirals, that want to spend hours slugging it out with an enemy armada. Me - i prefer Realistic. Makes all those tactical decisions weight twice more.
Sometime this month a new one is supposed to be released - the english version of "City of Abandoned Ships" - which to my understanding is the russian equivalent of the Build modpack, given a budget and a release - and it also runs on the 2.5 storm engine, instead of the massively outdated 2.0 storm engine that PotC uses. Might want to wait out for that one - as it will probably be more stable, and more coherent as Build mod (since the build mod is a community modpack - it's bloated with content no-one has bothered balancing, or even making it work with the bigger picture (what bigger picture, hah..))
I think CoAS is supposed to be a direct sequel to AoP - but i can't really make heads or tails out of all those russian spinoffs that use the same assets, engines, etc as the others.
For another game like Freelancer, but not, check out Hard Truck: Apocalypse. One of my favourite PC titles and VERY similar to Freelancer .... except set on post apocalyptic Earth and instead of spaceships, you have huge custom trucks outfitted with different kinds of weapons -- as well as the staple for the genre; tons of random missions/quests and plenty of trading
Try StarFight VI: Gatekeepers http://jpproduction.fi/games/sf6/ is my favorite freeware space game. It's a mix of adventure and space fighting/trading game. I think you gonna like it

Heheh, doesn't exactly look like an AAA title, but hey, post-apoc = must try at least.
And solid gameplay always beats shiny graphics, so this just might turn out to be a hidden gem.

Yeah just read a bit about COAS at Pirates Ahoy!, hope it gets released soon.. It wasn't very clear on their threads tho, is it the english translation that is due soon or the original russian version (so we'd have to wait for the translation even longer)?
As long as you ignore the horrifically funny Engrish translation from Russian .. this is a gem of a game, mate. Kept me playing right up until I finished it -- then I got the stand-alone expansion: "Rise of the Clans" and finished that too

The russian version has been out for quite some time now (a year?), it's the translation that everyone is waiting for. As i happen to understand russian - i've played it for a bit already - and it was pretty good. Lots of good ideas, new things. Certainly preferred it over Build.
Then why'd i suggest the Build mod in my first post in this thread? I was reinstalling it - as Empire gave me a crave for some "real" sailing - and right then i stumbled upon this thread. Spoke from my memories, and a bit too soon. They've done a lot of work with it since i last played it - too much, even. As i said about it being bloated and unbalanced. The damn thing wouldn't even run for 15min without crashing.
Yep I figure I'll get the Build mod 13 full if by the time I've completed Pirates! COAS isn't released yet. Seemed like it was the recommendation from both the players and the mod team @ Pirates Ahoy.

Yeah. It was an alpha i downloaded, after all. But i still remember the same issues for B13 - though.
