So whats it like? I have ordered it and its being installed on the 24th. The caps look pretty crap, got the 10mb package btw. I have a bit of a concern actually.. how the hell do they run a cable from the front of your house to the inside, do they dig up the concrete or what? Confused

they put a whole in your wall, or thats how they used to do it, and feed the cable in.. last one i had done was yearrrs ago and it run under the garden up the front wall into the house..

Anyhow on a diff note, virgins cap stuff is cruddy from all people ive spoken to about it and people I know that have it.. can be a pain in the ass.. never used to be but since goverment legislation they are putting out across the UK from some outside company usage/hardware/software bullshit monitoring system, so all the uk's bandwidth via providers can be handled better (distribution of fairness) etc..

This blows because the uk as if anyone dont know by now does not have enough bandwidth infastructure to cope with the demand, so they just fuck u in the ass when you sign up for any provider now.. You will notice ALL broadban in uk has the words "up to so many mb" thats so they can use the fairness card and cap your rate when needed..

I was leeching a fair bit on usenet a while back and they fracked me right up by capping me to 60-90 kb/s lol and that lasted from like 6pm to 1am every night for a mnth until they saw my leeching was dropping again and then the software releases the cap..

I dont personaly give a fuck about capping to an extent but I used to think shit if I wasnt retired to a point where Im at home all day, Id be at work come home and then my free time after work from 6pm to 1am would be shite for gaming etc lol and yet i was still paying the full amount for my so called "up to broadband amount".. funny really it is lol..

The other problem is these company types wont stop introducing new products, like say BT Vision.,. omfg what bullshit, supposed to run on a diff backbone but total crap for sure,, you can tell when its after pub hours and club hours and the boozer all come home in droves and they fire up a few porn films in my street on instan movie download to ur t.v and bang goes my rate again...

I dont care what they say about seperate lines its a fucking joke.. If I could move to sweeden etc I would at least they get I believe kick ass high speed dedicated lines..

Thanks for the info moosenoodles.. but what i mean is, how do they get it from the public path/road up my drive and to the front of the house? Need to get a new driveway done soon and just thinking about any complications. Im putting the house up for sale soon and need to keep certain things in mind.

I have heard about ppl being on the same optical cables and getting really bad speeds at times. I wont hesitate to cancel if it is really that bad after its installed.

jeeebus! there is one company here Time Warner Cable that wants to introduce caps to say 40gb for 50$ a month..so that is $1 per gigabyte..pretty retarded that US internet is moving backwards instead of forward.

.or today they want to make unlimited internet with no cap for 150$ so your total bill with TV, internet and home line would be almost $400 after taxes...while I just got 7.1mb line with tv and homeline and paying 150$ after taxes or close to it

People are quitting that company left and right..and I wanted to pick once current contract with DSL runs out..since they offer I think 20mb line...

we are yet soo far away from speeds like in Japan..what is it 140mb for 60$ a month? now that is crazy! fuck those assholes and their caps..can shovel it up their asses

I have had Virgin (Telewest) for over 9 years and have just cancelled it mate. Do yourself a favour and go for a less greedy company. The service was fantastic until Virgin took over. Sad

I'm on virgins 10mb and have been for years. I have never had a problem with it. The caps happen if you download about 2 GB or more between 4PM - > 9pm. so from 9PM -> 4pm night over morning its unlimited. I do most of my downloads over night anyways. Even when you get capped, you get dropped to 2mb from 10 which is hardly 'that' slow..

They drill a small hole under your front door normally to feed the wire through. Thats what they did at my place anyway.

Only one offers truly 'unlimited' service. And only on its top tier package.

It's not quite "truly unlimited" since they have the following stipulation:
"subject to our rather fair usage policy".

That's the scourge of fine print among all of the ISP's in the UK. Since they've been cheap about laying fiber in the UK bandwidth is costly, and they overbook (most ISP's do this to some extent since 100 customers aren't maxing their lines 24/7, however UK ISP's overbook more than other European countries ISP's) their capacity to an unknown ratio. If a customer is maxing out the bandwidth at peak traffic (ie. if there's a lot of customers requiring bandwidth), the priority for the customer with the highest usage will drop and let the others get some of that bandwidth.

It's a simple fact regarding overbooking, and this kind of prioritizing shouldn't be necessary if the infrastructure had been done right from the start. But ISP's (esp. BT, Virgin etc.) are greedy and if they can get away with selling more broadband than they can supply (ie. overbooking) they will.

From what I've heard Be is currently the best choice for high performance broadband.

*happy I live in Sweden, with truly unlimited 100mbit. Wink

Umm, whoever said that you need to be on Be*s top teer to get unlimited service is wrong.. all teers have "unlimited" access. Also Be* is not the only ISP in the UK to offer "unlimited" both 02 (any teer) and sky (top teer) offer this...

haha. It was capped 5-6 years ago. Only one ISP afaik (the biggest one Telenor) Anyway, what do yo mean by soon? Because the population increase... don't think it will matter that much. Look at Netherlands. 16mill ppl in such small area and they all have cheap unlimited BW afaik. Don't really know how ISP capacity works tho, but im pretty sure we will NEVER have capped inet.

virginmedia has unlimited bandwidth you can download hundreds of GB a month but at certain times of the day if you download more than XX depending on which package you are on then your connection gets limited for a few hours.

its better than beeing charged per GB after 40gb or whatever.

By the way guys, while it may be ridiculously expensive, Virgin's new 50Mbit line has no usage limits. The 20Mbit line had a "more than 3GB between 4PM and 10PM, we drop you from 20Mbit to 5Mbit" cap -- and the 10Mbit line had a "more than 2GB between 4PM and 10PM, we drop you from a 10Mbit to 2Mbit" cap.

While most could argue that ANY cap is unfair, I still reckon 5Mbit isn't exactly hell. The biggest downside came from the utterly broken capping timeframes. Virgin claim it's only if you download over xxx amount during peak hours (4-10) - but in the end, before I cancelled my service as I move to Norway, I was ending up being capped from 2PM in the afternoon until later night -- and often at ALL times on the weekend. Soon as I went over 3GB (I had the 20Mbit line) at any time on the weekend; bang. Capped down to 5Mbit.

My mum has the 2Mbit line (chortle) back in England and she gets capped 24/7. Doesn't matter what time of the day it is, if she goes over 1GB .. she's instantly capped for 3hrs.

Supposedly mate, but not true. Despite what time I d/l stuff be it overnight or early morning.. getting in from work. whatever! As soon as I d/l about 1 gig my cap kicks in and i'm stuck at 5 meg for the next 10 hours or so. In other words if I were to d/l constantly over a 24 hr period I would have full speed for about half an hour. Maybe an hour max. I have monitored this since the cap was put in place. Sad

Hence the reason I am switching

I have a 15 foot drive, how are they going to get the cable to my front door? Will they have to dig through the concrete?

Someone must know the answer Sad

Thanks for the links swingman.. seems i must have been searching with the wrong keywords or something on google. Looks like they won't dig up anything and they should be able to fix the cable along a small wall i have out the front.

Yeah, that could be a problem. I know its £99 to get fixed if its your fault and the cable is severed, not sure about vandalism.

You know.. I'm honestly not sure. My better half deals with that. I know it's REALLY cheap (she was pretty happy about that fact when she switched) but it's also SLOW. We're supposed to be getting 24Mbit, but we never see over 900KB/s download speed Sad

I'll ask her what ISP we're with.

24 mbit, sounds like NGT. Not fiber tho, so thats why you never get what you pay for.
