Quote: | Imagine if every myth, conspiracy theory and urban legend was true. Imagine if your worst nightmare came to life. Imagine a world where vampires hunt for mortal blood in dingy London nightclubs, where werewolves lurk in the sewers beneath Seoul, and where the undead prey on the living in the shadows of New York City. This is the premise for «The Secret World», Funcom's upcoming massively multiplayer online game set in the modern day real world.
•Urban environments - Throw yourself into the bustling urban environments of New York, London and Seoul. Shop for clothes, weapons and accessories. Stop by the local nightclub to socialize with your friends before heading out into the darkness that is slowly encroaching on the city streets.

•Action-packed combat - Lose yourself in the most intense real-time action-packed combat system ever. Aim, strafe, shoot – movement is key as bullets fly past you and explosions threaten to tear you apart. Swords or firearms, magic and melee, each offering a similarly intense, reactive combat experience.
•Secret societies - Join the Illuminati, the Templars or the Dragon - the three secret societies that pull the strings of our world. Work your way to the top, earn titles and rewards, and play a key role in the battle for world domination.
•Player-made organisations - Create or join player-made organisations called cabals. Create your own headquarters, and decorate and furnish it to your liking. All cabals are ranked against each other, and a cabal's success will bring fame, fortune and power to its members.
•Track your progress - Earn points for everything you do - from combat and exploration, to trade skills and PvP - in order to rank high on both local and global scoreboards, gain titles and worldwide acclaim, and help make your secret society the most powerful and influential of them all.
•Intense player vs. player combat - Take part in ferocious, non-stop player vs. player action in the Battle for Hollow Earth. Fight to control anima, a priceless resource deep within the bowels of our world that will bring unprecedented power to whichever cabal that collects it
•Next-generation graphics - Featuring the latest in cutting-edge graphics technology, explore beautifully realized real-world locations that will truly set the standard for next-generation massively multiplayer online games. Prepare for an audiovisual experience unlike anything seen before.

Yes they were working on both AoC and TSW at the same time. Hopefully this one will be more successful especially since Ragnar Tornquist is behind it, I loved TLJ series.

They were working on 2 MMOs at the same time ? Talk about desperation. They really want to pull a Blizzard, too bad it's not working very well for them.

Conan's popularity fell off faster than expected, but don't forget that FunCom also runs Anarchy Online, which is one of the longest-running MMOs out there. So, it's not like they haven't had success with MMOs. Really, Conan was their first game that wasn't a success.

Okay, first off: technically, there was never a TLJ2 (Ragnar Tornquist has said that he doesn't consider Dreamfall to be TLJ2). So, the planned next game in the series, Dreamfall Chapters, will thusly not technically be TLJ3. Tornquist has said that one day, far in the future, he plans to make a game actually called "The Longest Journey 2," which would be the final conclusion to all the stories in the series, and the final TLJ game. This, of course, won't come for many years; not until after the conclusion of Dreamfall Chapters, anyways.
Now, if you'd read Tornquist's blog, you'd see that just a couple months ago, he said that, while Dreamfall Chapters isn't currently in production, it is planned out, the stories are written, and they will make them when the time is right (probably after the completion of The Secret World). Remember, there was a seven-year gap between the releases of The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, so as long as Dreamfall Chapters starts showing up before 2013, then the wait will not have been as long as it was between the first two.

Actually, it was simply officially announced, and the title was revealed, in early 2007. The idea that eventually lead to this game was actually initially conceived by Ragnar Tornquist wayyyy back in 1997, then pitched to FunCom following the completion of TLJ in 1999, and the game actually went into production for the first time in 2002. The game was called "Cabal" at this point (perhaps some of you remember an MMO by this name that seemingly disappeared; it has now become "The Secret World"), and a playable demo was presented at E3 2003. This version of the game was eventually scrapped, and they started again from scratch.
In 2005, FunCom registers a trademark for "The Secret World," and begins pre-production on the game. In Q3 2006, the game (which at this point was referred to as "The World Online" for a short while, before this title was finally dropped) goes into full production with a small team of about 20 people. By Q3 2006, the team was expanded to about 33 people, and in November 2006, a couple of very low-resolution screenshots of a very, very early prototype version of the game running on a very early engine were leaked to Wikipedia.
In May 2007, they began an early viral marketing campaign, and started hiring more people to add to the TSW team. Following the release of Age of Conan in May 2008, much of the team from that game was transferred to TSW, bringing the team for the game up to full size. It's now chugging along in full production, though a release window has not been confirmed.

Okay, buddy. First off: "desperation"? What the fuck are you talking about? Having a multi-game production pipeline/capacity is "desperate"? Excuse me? I guess EA must be the most "desperate" company in the world, then...
FunCom is a fairly large studio. They have over 300 employees, so of course they're working on multiple games at any given time. Plenty of MMO developers work on multiple games at a single time (just look at Turbine, NetDevil, or Cryptic Studios).
Now, what the hell is this "not working very well for them" business? What the hell do you know about this company? How about you talk about what "works very well for them," after they launch this game?
God, I can't stand the sort of smugness that makes people think they know all this shit about companies that they only have the most basic information about...

Only thing that i know about Funcom is that TLJ1 is one of the best adventure games ever. I also know that TLJ2 was consolised crap and that they made couple of mmos in the meantime because they apparently smelled money there.
So fuck them and fuck this new mmo that they are making now.

Puh-leeze. Even if Dreamfall was crap (it's not), the Xbox had nothing to do with it. Tornquist has acknowledged the shortcomings of the game, and the fact that they had the game on two platforms had nothing to do with it.

Anarchy Online was in development before The Longest Journey 1, dumbass. They started AO in 1995, a year before TLJ1.
And certainly, no one "smelled money" in MMOs, back in 1995. MMOs were an incredibly risky idea back then.

Haha, fine. Random Funcom haters are in the minority.

i don't care for mmos, but i'm hoping this will make enough money for tornquist to be able to go on with dreamfall chapters.
also dreamfall was not consolized crap, fawe. i'm guessing you're one of those purists that wants their adventure games to consist solely of "use X on Y" types of puzzles. in this case you might wanna take a look at interactive fiction, especially some of adam cadre's work. excellent writing coupled with some puzzles CAN make an excellent adventure.

You havent played TLJ, have you? Its ok, decent story, easy puzles, but nothing compared to TLJ. Its like comparing Blade Runner with Start Wars. Still I'd much rather see them make Dreamfall 2, than another mmo.

Nobody in their right mind would say Dreamfall was as good as Longest Journey -- BUT! Dreamfall was still excellent.

Okay, so...one of those is an absolute kickass movie (based off an incredible short novel, which also spawned a good point-n-click adventure game as well), and the other is...a series of three legendary movies, two blah ones, and one pretty great one? Odd comparison.
Regardless, both Blade Runner and Star Wars (overall) kick ass.

As I already pointed out, there will be an episodic follow-up to Dreamfall, called Dreamfall Chapters. It's in the planning stages (and again, like I said, as long as it starts before 2013, I don't think we can complain about the wait). And then "The Last Journey 2" after that.

There's a bit of logic (a fair simple one - i think...) in it. You'll be relatively easy translating it while just watching the digits that represent seconds in the timer.
I came up with this set of numbers (starting from left to right): 1169 04 35 (the last pair of digits can be different already cause it represents minutes and should've already changed by now while writing the post.)

I actually play and pay for Age of Conan and like it quite a bit, despite it's flaws. However, the game is just now at the point where it should have been at release. The new AoC expansion looks good and most of the major bugs and such are worked out, with Funcom finally providing more content and working on balance. I will say that since Craig Morrison came on and they got rid of Gaute Godager, the game has improved immensely. The combat is the best I've seen in an MMO and the graphics are much better than any other MMO I can think of.
Despite the fact that I like and play Conan and am one of the people who bought Anarchy Online the day it came out, only to cancel my sub like a week later because it was unplayable, I don't foresee buying any more Funcom games. They just seem to push them out the door before they are retail ready. AO may be a good game, but it was the worst mess of a game I ever saw at release. I kept getting stuck under the world all the time and couldn't play. AoC was kind of buggy, but I didn't have too many problems with it. However, the whole game mechanic system and itemization, as well as lack of good content, along with the unbelievable number of bugs and exploits made it a game for the die hard players. Like I said, I love the combat, fatalities, adult content and gritty world of Conan, enough so that I'm still playing to this day, but I really can't imagine playing another Funcom MMO again unless something miraculous happens.

The people on the forums have worked out that it's counting down to December 2012, when the Mayan calendar supposedly ends. They have ARGs from time to time, next one will probably start around Halloween.
You can find information on the past ARGs here: http://www.crygaia.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
