For all of you unaware of all the crap that has been happening with gothic series recently:
Few days ago a message on one of the german forums appeared saying something that seemed like the long-promised Gothic 3 uber patch is not coming, because JoWood(Gothic publisher) doesn't want to pay Piranha Bytes(gothic developer) for the development of patch. After the news spread like wildfire JoWood responded with an official statement that the patch will indeed come, and that they would never abandon support. Similar statement was made from one of PB devs on the forum.
Couple of days later(today) JoWood and PB announced they were splitting up, because they "couldn't come to an agreement about the next Gothic game", and saying also something about the (now canceled?) patch development. It is still unclear who wanted what, whether PB wanted to stop doing Gothic series, and JoWood did, or there were some kind of other problems.
Soon after the announcement of them breaking up, JoWood announced it was looking for a developer studio for Gothic 4. How exactly JoWood got the right to Gothic IP I have no idea, but it is surely a bad thing. I am glad PB decided to stop their relationship with JoWood, as they were mostly to blame for G3 being such a bugfest, but G4 not being made by PB? Hell no!
Here are some quotes and links:
JoWood about the patch
Quote: | Dear Fans, Gamers, Readers,
Of course we heard of the rumors and specs saying that JoWooD cancelled any patch-support for Gothic 3. We want to clarify unmistakably that from JoWooD's point of view these are only rumors and we neither thought about "Cancelling patch-support" nor "Abandonment of any future plans about upcoming patch(es)" nor will we accept such ideas without any consequences.
We ask you to understand that while two companies are into negotiations both of them can't and are not allowed to talk about the progress, but this should of course not concern the patch.
It's even quite the contrary ! We're doing our best to deliver high-quality patches in future again which are for free of course !
Your JoWooD-Team

Termination of negotiations
Quote: | Piranha Bytes and JoWooD to go separate ways
Essen, May 22 - 2007 After the final termination of negotiations over a continuation of the Gothic series, Piranha Bytes are forced to move in other directions. Which titles are to be published under the Gothic brand in the nearer future is totally unclear at this point in time.
The negotiations which were held since November 2006 did not lead to an acceptable result for any of the parties involved.
Piranha Bytes can not meet the demands of the community by releasing a major patch with content-related changes. The original idea was to develop this patch as a side-project along with an add-on or a further title (and to provide the patch as a free download as well as to include it with the boxes of said products).

German: Announcement of G4 from JoWood
Quote: | JoWooD Productions arbeitet an Gothic 4

I'm still waiting to play Gothic 3 properly, have put it aside waiting for this patch. JoWood really are a terrible publisher, they have several innovative games under their wing but they fuck them over by releasing them before they're finished. I hope PB can go on and find a better publisher to work for, even if its without the Gothic license.

So am I, waiting them to fix G3 so I can finally play it, but that doesn't seem to be a possibility anymore. All went to the crapper, and most likely they're never gonna finish the game.

Fan patches take years to reach a satisfactory level (like with Bloodlines). Screw this, I've been waiting all this time to start playing, we really NEED some professionals to get an official superpatch out and scrape the shit off of this diamond.

man too bad. i sort of respect PB and JoWood, so this is sort of a bad thing. And even tho G3 turned out to be so buggy i always liked the team. well, if they fall they'l just add their names to the big list of things that might have happened. Black Isle is in there, and Ion Storm as well, so they wont be in bad company.

Gothic 3 works "fine" with the 1.12 patch and performance is quite good.
However alot of skills are still bugged such as poison and others may be difficult to learn since noone has found a trainer for those yet.
The 12 paladin side quest is still not completable since the 12th paladin is bugged even though various scripts and similar point to him taking the relic but ingame he does nothing.
Fully possible to break the various main quest stages without realising it, especially finding the five holy relics too early without knowing what they are and selling them, thus being unable to finish the game.
(Similar thing happened to me when I liberated the human town with all the shamans since the shaman who had the relic ran away/fled and I was unable to find him again.)
Some of those out of memmory errors still exist, particularly in windows Vista but there are fixes for that on the official Jowood forums.
Combat is still unbalanced since you can just spam LMB to quickly overwhelm enemies without using combos and similar combat techniques.
Loot balance is slightly off with all enemy weapons being worn aside from the best orc Krush war axe wich the player can find quite early and thus get a 250 DMG weapon though it does still require 400 strength to wield wich help somewhat, ofcourse that flame sword with 100 damage worth 1000 gold can still be bought in the first town thus rendering several other interesting but lower damaging and more expensive weapons useless.
There's alot of other problems reported on the various forums but the game is playable albeit somewhat unbalanced and it can still crash due to the memory issues and ofcourse care must be taken not to break the various quests by accident.

JoWoods fault not the developers PiranhaBytes, they have just lost their right to do any Gothic related stuff in the future despite the fact that they invented the series and developed all the other games.
I don't blame them for not doing a patch as they most likely have to get a new project going and find a potential publisher for that, time is money especially so when you have no hand feeding you.

PB was asked to do the patch, they got many months to do it still they couldnt achieve anything.. When the time was up PB they asked for even more funds, JW wouldnt and they parted, from what i've read. I blame the lousy devs at PB not JW...
Burn in hell PB, G3 sucked ass, cant even imagine how bad G4 would've been if it was handled by PB.

Since those "lousy devs" were the ones who made Gothic 1 and 2, and JoWood is infamous for shit like what happened here, I find that version of the story a bit hard to believe.

Though Gothic 2 also had somewhat of a super patch in the expansion pack Night of the Raven wich were relased some time after the original, nearly changed the whole game with all the changes it incorporated.
Will be interesting to see how Gothic 4 turns out but since the original developers are gone it will probably be quite different and it's also for next generation consoles this time.

Not really, read the official forums, even some of the fan boi mods seems a bit upset on how the devs handled things with G3.
I give them credit for making G1-G2, they were great, but i wont forgive them for turning the series into total shit with G3 and saying stuff like "we listened to our fans", that's such bullshit. Which fans wanted the fighting dumbed down, diving removed, climbing removed, lockpicking changed etc etc?

Being a big PB fan, after some thinking, I agree that PB was at fault more than JW for G3. Guess I have to change my post now.
But they are a small team, and imho they only had bad planning. There wasn't enough time to do what they wanted with the game, and they went in a different direction trying to follow games like oblivion, and they couldn't handle it.
JoWoods fault would be that they didn't want to wait for the game to be properly finished but, when PB signed an agreement saying that in 3 years game will be out and JW will get cash flowing at that point, JoWood probably had company plans for that period, like purchasing another company(which they did do, recently after release of Gothic), so they planned on that cash flow, and game had to be released.
EDIT: also check out www.rpgwatch.com, they keep track of everything Gothic related. Interesting read for any fan A lot of updates on the story
