other note: i can have my resoultion in 800x600 on my desktop.

if it's possible you most likely can switch it ingame...
or probably with such commandline parameters. sometimes it's -window, sometimes -w...anyway read the readme.txt it's always in there.
For some games however it's just not possible

why would anyone run the games on 800 or 640 resolutions on a 24" monitor , use the highest resolution and get a better video card

You could try changing the resolutions manually from .ini or .cfg files, if there is one.

xstartup.cfg
// This script file is executed automatically on startup.
//
// Building internal game function table...
exec xgamefnc.cfg
// Load device default-file table.
exec xdevcfgs.cfg
// Default render configuration
exec render.cfg
// Binding generic global keyboard bindings.
// The "global" user is for global keyboard bindings, like tilde, escape, etc
setbinduser GLOBAL
// Keyboard front-end key mappings
bind +K_TILDE CONSOLE
bind +K_ESC GPAUSE
bind +K_ENTER GCONTINUE
bindalias SCREENSHOT "ren_screengrab"
bind +K_F12 SCREENSHOT
print "Autoexec Complete!"
where can i add the res :/

You should try running your desktop in 1280x1024, or 1600x1200, then you can run games windowed without them taking up the whole screen (which would be defeating the purpose)

Re-read his post he said he CAN have his resolution in 800x600 on the desktop, NOT that it is.

get powerstrip it has like 1000000 settings one of them is forcing a game to run under a certain resolution.

hmm, just a guess: Maybe is has something to do with the refresh frequency of the monitor. XP has this bug to set the frequency to 60hz as soon as d3d or direct draw kicks in. I doubt it but it could be that your monitor does not show 640x480 and 800x600 with 60hz. Try to use your gfx driver to override this and set it to 85hz.
