A lookback and perspective at RockPaperShotgun
This is easily one of the best and most influential FP-RPG's ever made.
Cheers to you Irrational and Ken Levine.
Oh and to Shodan of course, for being such a loveable antagonist.

Look at you hacker, a pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors.
AWESOME. I enjoyed the first SysShock, but nowhere near as much as I loved #2. That was one hell of a creepy, awesome, enjoyable, FPS-RPG. Thinking about going back to it again.... mmm...

I envy you, because you get to play this awesome masterpiece for the first time.
I'll never forget the first time I tried it - the very first encounter with a Hybrid almost gave me a heart attack, because the bastard took me by surprise.
I may be in minority with this, but if you can stomach the graphics I'd suggest you to avoid the mod adding better 3d models for the monsters: IMHO it makes them much less creepy (especially the Hybrids and the Midwife) and therefore it detracts from the overall atmosphere.

Sorry but I'm so not playing that game. I played it back around 2000, and it scared the shit out of me. Plus damn things killed me so fast I was furious

I'm surprised that so many people are encountering problems with SS2..I have it installed in both my laptop (Vista 32bit) and PC (W7 64bit) with all the mods and I've never had a single crash-problem
edit: install it and play it, now!

Is there a decent widescreen mod for this?

Quote: | So why can’t you buy the System Shock games through download services like Steam or Good Old Games, where it’s one of the most requested titles? And why hasn't anyone rebooted the series or created another sequel?
The answer is where things get messy.
EA's System Shock Story
In 2006, a trio of rumors hinted that Electronic Arts was making System Shock 3. First came a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Then came a couple of unconfirmed reports in Shacknews and PC Gamer U.K., with the latter publication reporting that EA’s Redwood Shores studio was handling development.
But even if EA wanted to publish another System Shock, the company didn't have the rights to do so. Back when the original game was made, producer Warren Spector negotiated a deal in which EA got the trademark to the series, while the developers at Looking Glass Studios kept the rights. To create another System Shock game, you need both. "My thinking was it would force us to be married so it never would be that either party should be able to say we own that, we’re making the next game, screw you," Spector told the San Jose Mercury News last November.
In hindsight, the deal only jeopardized System Shock’s future. Looking Glass Studios closed in 2000, a year after System Shock 2's release, and the copyright to the series went into the hands of an insurance company. That left EA with only the System Shock name, but no actual development rights. |

To all the fans and supporters of LookingGlass:
After a decade of creating games as an independent developer, LookingGlass has run its course. Despite valiant efforts to secure funding, we ran out of cash, and unfortunately had no alternative but to close our doors.
The news of LookingGlass’ demise has spread fast. We’ve read thousands of e-mails, newsgroup postings, and letters from fans telling us how much they enjoyed playing our games, and how much LookingGlass will be missed. The outpouring of sympathy and kind words has been remarkable to witness. Clearly we touched our audience profoundly.
We want to acknowledge our fans and express our gratitude for your support over the years. Our games were made for you -- to entertain, challenge, and spark your imagination with new worlds and experiences. Your enjoyment of our games sustained us through the years, and fueled our creative passion and dedication for striving to make great games. We have been fortunate to enjoy such a loyal audience.
LookingGlass took creative risks. We introduced new kinds of game play, such as the hybrid 3D action/RPG play of the Underworld’s and the System Shock’s, the squad based 3D action/simulation of Terra Nova, or the first person “sneaker” play of the Thief’s. Even in the more cut-and-dried civilian flight simulation genre, our Flight Unlimited series took a fresh approach. We intentionally charted new game design territory.
Unfortunately, being a pioneer does have its risks. Ultimately these risks contributed to LookingGlass’ inability to continue forward. For the sake of our fans, and for the future of the game industry at large, we hope that the demise of groups like ours will not dissuade other game developers and publishers from the path of innovation. While doing better looking versions of last year’s hit titles may be a short term path to success, to thrive and grow the game industry must take some creative risks and continue to innovate.
Although LookingGlass has fallen, we pass on the flag to those who are up to the challenge.
From the LG crew |
Also here's a picture of the awards the studio earned during it's life.
Unfortunately, as the press release feared, it did sway others from being innovative, that is to say almost everybody.

So... assuming that I want to install and play this and the original right now...
Any help with setting it up/recommending some ready-to-run version or rip?
EDIT: Actually had this bookmarked:

Will give it a go.

Any hints on improving performance?
I don't know much about dosbox and I'm getting some pretty low FPS in fullscreen mode.
I don't care that much about the graphics themselves, but having fps jumps from 20 to 50 really kills any game for me.

The performance of the game's full-screen fluctuates between 20-50fps, if I play with the menus enabled it's always >40 fps.
The other thing that turns me off is no Y-axis invert option, as far as I could see.

you could try upping frameskip / change the dosbox resolution / resolution scaling method / render output(opengl/d3d, whatever works for your hardware)
i actually had tons of cycles to spare and played at high resolution with fancy scaling enabled, making it look pretty(heh)
i too play fps games inverted and i get really irritated when i can't switch it, but ss deals a lot with the inventory, which is uninverted, so i actually preferred to play it like this

FU guys, I'm addicted.
And SS2 is supposed to be even better than this?
EDIT: Oh, and I figured out how to invert the Y axis, just change the signal of the mlook_vsens value located in the "custom profile" set in the XCYB.cfg file, works like a charm.
