Drox Operative is a starship action RPG with warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic, evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer for Windows and Mac.
Eons ago the Drox ruled the galaxy through their mighty Operatives. These elite starship captains were trained to accomplish the impossible at whatever cost necessary. Whether employing stealth or brute force, they were always deadly. Using these Operatives, the Drox built a starlane system for quick travel amongst the stars, colonized and conquered millions of planets, and ruled the galaxy with an iron grip for over 100,000 years. Eventually realizing their Operatives were a threat, they attempted to assassinate all of them. They failed. The following Galactic Civil War was devastating.
Thousands of years later, the Drox are extinct, but the secretive Drox Operative guild lives on. They have learned their lesson though: loyalty to any one race is foolish. They now work for whoever can pay. And pay they do! Empires might span hundreds of planets and thousands of ships, but when a critical task arises, they still turn to an Operative.
In the new space race, the major races are scouting, colonizing, and expanding, trying to take over the galaxy by diplomacy, technology, war, or any other means their scheming minds can contemplate.
As a Drox Operative it's NOT your job to manage all of those annoying people, build thousands of buildings, play nice with your enemies, or balance the budget. It IS your job to pick the winning side and maybe even help them conquer the galaxy if you're being nice, more importantly though is to rake in as many credits as possible, well that and build the coolest, deadliest ship in the known universe. Not many screw with an Operative captaining a Dreadnaught!
Drox Operative is scheduled to be released in the 1st quarter of 2012, however it will be released when it's done.

I'd completely forgotten about this thread and I'm part of the beta. I have to say... I kinda wish I had just waited and this just isn't very good It's nothing like the awesome Depths of Peril or Din's Curse, the game just doesn't seem to have any kind of structure at all.. and the space implementation is dull and tedious as all hell. It's been a while since I felt like I've waste money... but buying into this so early definitely qualifies as one of those times

Ouch! Thats not what i wanted to hear
You tried the later patches or is the game just not any good?
Well in Soldak's defence, I haven't tried it for over a month or so.. ever since Roger told me about the preorder stuff a short while back. I bought the preorder and started playing. It LOOKS like Depths of Peril, but it just doesn't seem to have any cohesion, it's like they just threw everything in together and said "Here, it's space! Go explore it" -- which sounds good on paper, but doesn't feel right in the game.
(strangely enough, the player doesn't realise you can still fire your weapons while you are running away.. they're beam weapons that automatically target the nearest enemy attacker, so even while you're fleeing you can still be firing your weapons)
That's IndieRPG's quicklook at the game and it should show off just what I'm talking about, in regards to the lack of structure or cohesion. In my short play the only thing that really stood out for me was the ship customisation... there really is a LOT of different addons you can find and loot.

To me, the game just feels very...very.. beta. It's clunky and tedious with no real method of play except "drag your mouse here, now alternate between hammering 1-2-3 on the keyboard to fire at anything that shoots you first" --- if you want a game with a similar style, but infinitely better designed and put together, check out Flatspace 2 or Space Rangers 2.
Actually I don't think it's so bad. I've enjoying it. It lacks a certain depth, a story. What you do in a sector it don't matter in the next sector. So the choices and consequences are only limited to the sector you're playing.
I find the combat good. And the way you equip your ship will influence how you fight.
The game has a lot of potential and is getting better with each new patch. Sabin have you try it after the last patches?
As a matter of fact, I just did. It didn't change my opinion.. sadly. I'm just not into the game at all, nothing about is gripping me like Depths of Peril did. It's basically Depths of Peril "in space" but with a lot less meat to it. There's nothing to do in the game, there's absolutely no point to having planets since there's nothing to do on them that you can't already do by talking to a passing ship. There's no reason to engage in diplomacy or sabotage or anything, nothing about the game feels engaging.

Is the Escape Velocity games still the best in this genre( excluding Space Rangers, which is a bit different)? I think I've missed a few over the years. Trying out Flatspace 2 now, then I'll try this.

damn this title is alot of fun! Never been too fond of the action rpg thing, but had a great time with this. We did a lil review if you're interested in my opininion on the game or just some gameplay footage :
Ah yeah, thanks. Remember playing this a while ago, but forgot all about it. Seems they've come a long way since then, though still a fair bit left. Looking good, but not yet a EVNova replacement I think.
Been trying out Drox, but I found it boring somehow. Can't quite put my finger on it. Just seems a bit too formulaic. You've pretty much experienced the entire game within five-ten minutes of playing, then it's just about continually getting slightly better equipment while 'replaying' the same scenarios over and over.
Nice. Beta 1.003 is just out on the official site.
* fixed overlords appearing in dimensional pockets
Hmm, I kinda liked that I had to go explore and search for them.
If you like pure itemization you will love this game. There are so many more possibilities than in a fantasy based hack n slash, where most items are pretty straightforward (armors gives Def, weapons give Atk).
It needs more content and perhaps proper skills though, which hopefully an expansion will bring.
