I agree. FPS is the way to go if you want to be able to immerse yourself in a game. Too bad Doom 3 will shit all over my comp.

While I have never played a game I would consider "scary", I have considered some parts of games scary or to put it better creepy. Like the water room(s) in Half Life with those underwater monsters. For some reason those fucking things creep the hell out of me.

I'm not scared by games (I simply don't get people going "I've played for a few minutes and had to quit because it was too scary" - it's just a game FFS), Thief had plenty of scary moments and is my favourite "scary" game. 'Down in the Bonehoard' is fucking freaky and has an awesome atmosphere.

I think the sacriest game ever is System Shock 2.The atmosphere is very good, the sound was pumping your blood every time. You were always on your toes, waiting for something to pop up, scary shit.

Grabbed By The Ghoulies
No seriously, probably Silent Hill 1 .. maybe The Suffering, which made me jump one or two times. Although both games are just more twisted than scary.

The thief series has its freaky bits. I remember some scary moments in the previous games, but the crown goes to the Shalebridge Cradle Asylum mission in Thief 3. A mission with a handful of baddies but an enviornment eerie enough to make you shit your pants out.

is the suffering "wow this shit is freaky" scary, or "OMG that monster that just jumped out gave me a fright, bang bang your dead now hahahaha" scary?

Silent Hill 2 and 3 really sick disturbing games, you gotta have a strong heart if you manage playing thoose games in total darkness on a big screen tv.
also AVP2 is damn scary as well.

i have do agree on the AVP and AVP2 Marine missions, they crapped the poo out of me, thiefs had their moments, but i would have to give my 10pts, do Silent hill 2 and 3, and the version what swebarb2 sayd, total darkness+big screen tv+ Silent hill= Poo in pants x 2

The first and only game to really scare the shit out of me was the original Doom series. I used to play at night with all the lights out and headphones on just to get the maximum level of scariness.
I remember once walking into a dark corridor (I think it was in Doom 2,) seeing a light at the other end and starting to run for it but half way down the walls opened and I heard an ear piercing shriek. All of a sudden I'm surrounded by about 20 imps and other assorted denizens of hell. I spent the next few minutes fighting frantically for my life with nothing but a trusty shotgun.
That imp shriek still sends shivers down my spine even thinking about it. Now that's a scary game
