|
 |
hi guys
am looking for some suggestions of squad based strategy/RPG games similar to jagged alliance 2, silent storm will not run on the old laptop i have gotten recently and there was an old squad based game i had played a right few years ago it was more or less JA2 (even going as far to rip off the story about restoring the rightful leader of a country to power) it was in 3d and i cannot remember the name of it, any ideas?

there are two characters that stood out for me in the game i mentioned ripping off JA2...one of the characters in it was an irish bloke, and more astoundingly-according to his bio he was in the IRA, which at the time was a very strange thing to be selling here in northern ireland
other characters were a canadian female sniper and various US "hard men"

Sadly, JA2 is the best there is and best there will be for a looong time. Have you tried 1.13 and the various mods? Really breathes some extra life into it.

If you play enemy unknown/ufo defense or Terror from The Deep, make sure you patch them with XcomUtil

I'm not so sure about that, there has been some attempts at that, like Extraterrestrials.
Anyway it looks very nice in dosbox using openglhq, hardware2x and hq4xfilter - no edges on anything and crisp textures.

I think Ken Levine of Bioshock, System Shock, Thief /fame/infamy is working on a new X-Com game.
Anyway have a look at this running in dosbox
Notice the lack of jagged edges on the spacecraft.
And no jagged lines on the countries.

Yes it's just a shame you can't get the Amiga AGA version music in the dosbox version, however you can get that in the CE XP version provided you're running windows xp, else it won't work.
It's the Amiga version I used to play so I find that music to be iconic, now I've just settled for less, ie poor midi. I really should get a new XP setup in vmware

Try the first couple of Commandos games. Real-time tactical. The first one was a blast.

Shadow Company: Left for dead.....
That was a pretty good game, although it wasn't turn based.

Speaking of Amiga - instead of searching for where I might have the pc version of this game...I could play the amiga version in UAE never thought of that tbh |
The reason why I'm not doing that is because of Xcomutil. It really makes for a more challenging gameplay.

How old is the Laptop? Try Silent Storm (2003) and the expansion Sentinels (2005ish), pretty decent!

the laptop is an old HP nx9005,i put 1gb ram in it, but the gfx chip in it is olde worlde.... and ati igp 320m...no hardware T and L on it, mind you it plays neverwinter nights pretty ok
anywhoo...thanks for all the suggestions, guys- now to find some of those old gems, im actually tempted to stick UFO-enemy unknown on, but i think thats maybe a bad thing to do...i lost enough sleep playing it back in the day on the amiga, and then on the CD32 lol
so many hours spent playing it instead of sleeping it definitely had "just one more mission" gameplay, addictive and with a depth that isnt seen in games these days

Sorry, missed this earlier... Yeah get the 1.13 mod definitely, in itself it's a HUGE improvement over vanilla JA2 with loads of awesome new features, but it also serves as a framework for other mods.. Bear's Pit is the authority site when it comes to JA2 modding.

And as people previously mentioned the X-Com series, try also Xcom Apocalypse. I spent hundreds of hours playing that years ago, it was massive.
