There's rumors about it using something but as far as I can see it's nothing that's confirmed, most extreme ones are talking about a 4.3 update but I doubt it's something like that.
(Would be released earlier if so.)
Monster Hunter only required a IOS/cIOS using base 37 or what it's called which is why many people had issues.
(Base 38, 57 and so on being used by default for many cIOS I think it was, there are pretty good guides on how to manage several so I use rev.19 for 249 and 250 with different bases and Custom cIOS 5 for 222, 223 and 224 with different bases so it covers everything.)
SO GLAD to hear it's difficult! But 4 hours without a star? Damn we're in for a long game! Specially considering there are now 240! to collect
I'm really glad to hear they've brought back the old style map, and I am also glad to hear that it's a bit more like SM64 in that you will find yourself struggling to get enough stars to progress - challenging gameplay ftw!

I think its just like in the first Mario Galaxy, you could collect 120 stars with Mario and then unlock Luigi and then replay the game again by collecting all the 120 stars again.
And then the last star after all that ( ), heh only played it trough once and didn't bother collecting all stars though I did most levels.
(Long game as each star is one level though some repeat via those comet challenges and similar but it's still very diverse.)
Might use the same IOS detection that the new Prince of Persia supposedly uses though but burning the disc should work from what I've read.
(Not very knowledgeable about it all but I've read some of it, newer Wii's would need a portable USB disc reader though due to the changes during late 2009.)
I remember my father buying me a nintendo system when I was like 5, first game I played.... Super Mario Brothers.... then a few years later I played Super Mario Brother 3 (still my all time fav), then the supernintendo era, the n64 era, and now the wii era.
Super Mario Galaxy was great, I expect nothing less of this one!
I'm completely obsessed for anything Mario related, guys. I even have Mario underwear

and it'll utilize the heart monitor it's a nice vid advertising the utility. pretty cool stuff.
Hmmm, just looked at the Luigi trailer again at GameTrailers (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/luigi-gameplay-super-mario/65200) and as you can see in the beginning, you actually talk to Luigi in the level you're in and then you switch and play with him.
In Galaxy 1, you had to switch to Luigi through the main menu before you load your save.
For some reason, I get a feeling that Luigi isn't standing on a spot on every level in Galaxy 2 waiting for you to switch with him so you can collect all 120 stars with Mario and then again the same stars with Luigi, might actually be that Luigi is playable on some levels, either he collects the same stars as Mario or he can access to some special stars that Mario can't and not the 120 x 2 stars as in Galaxy one. This might actually mean that there is really 240 unique stars to collect.
I could totally be wrong though, but to actually have 240 unique stars would be awesome!
